PONANT invites you on a brand-new expedition cruise in the Indian Ocean. From Mauritius to the Seychelles via Madagascar and Reunion Island, take a 14-day cruise aboard Le Lyrial to enjoy beaches, nautical activities, and discovering endemic fauna and flora as well as places of breathtaking natural beauty that few tourists visit.

You’ll board your ship in Port Louis, Mauritius.

After calling at Reunion Island, you will reach Madagascar, the island continent. On the east coast first, you will discover Île Sainte-Marie, once a lair of pirates, with its authentic and untouched character. On the west coast, you will discover Nosy Komba, also known as “lemur island”, home to large colonies of these small, agile primates, Nosy Mitsio and its immaculate beaches, and Majunga from which you’ll be able to explore Ankarafantsika National Park.

You will then reach the Glorioso Islands, part of the Scattered Islands. This beautiful archipelago with very few inhabitants is home to exceptional fauna and flora including, in particular, marine turtles. Further on, on the small island of Alphonse, you will have the opportunity to snorkel and scuba dive among the brightly-coloured sea life.

Before disembarking in Victoria on the island of Mahé, a veritable picture-postcard awaits you in La Digue: palm trees, granite rocks, white sand and crystal-clear waters.

The encounters with the wildlife described above illustrate possible experiences only and cannot be guaranteed.

    LE LYRIAL

Fourth ship in this superb series loyal to the PONANT spirit, Le Lyrial like her sisterships embodies the subtle alliance between luxury, intimacy and wellbeing which is PONANT’s signature. The elegance of her exterior and interior lines and her intimate size (only 122 staterooms and suites) make this a rare and innovative yacht on the cruise market.

    Interior Design
We have been inspired by the destinations we visit and decided to create a subtle variation around a palette of blues. Ranging from the luminous delicate grey-blue of the Polar ice to splashes of the vivid turquoise blue found in Mediterranean coves, it also includes the blue light of the future pole star.

Regularly used as the “zero point” in scientific studies, they offer their rare visitors almost pristine vegetation composed mainly of mangrove, as well as long beaches of shimmering sand stretching out behind turquoise lagoons, and coral reefs that are home to the world’s highest concentration of sea turtles.

Turquoise waters just asking you to swim in them, lush vegetation sheltering giant tortoises, beaches of fine sand fringed with coconut trees and surrounded with those emblematic large granite rocks with their pink highlights like at the famous Anse Source d’Argent: the perfect picture postcard… Authentic and preserved, the island follows a peaceful rhythm, with the only means of transport along its little roads being bikes or traditional oxcarts.

    A luxury expedition voyage

Choosing a PONANT expedition cruise means choosing a state of mind: the alliance of elegance and authenticity, of exploration and comfort, of adventure and refinement… The comfort of your ship and your stateroom, personalised and attentive service, refined gastronomy: a very special atmosphere that we take great care to maintain. In the heart of the archipelagos of Oceania or the atolls of the Indian Ocean, along the wild coastlines of Central America or Australia, our luxurious services will ensure that your expedition cruise is an unforgettable experience.

    PONANT, expedition cruise specialists

With almost 20 years of experience in the extreme regions, PONANT, the world’s number 1 polar cruise company, is also a real specialist in the planet’s most remote tropical regions. Our latest-generation fleet has the most modern technology to guarantee both your safety and respect for the regions visited. The size of our ships means we can get as close as possible to areas that are difficult to reach, offering a privileged access to preserved sites. Our flexibility enables us to adapt to the surprises inherent to these expedition itineraries.

    Professional expedition teams, varied activities

After scouting missions in the field, our Expedition Leaders and their teams of naturalist guides design exceptional itineraries in the tropical regions. During the cruise, they organise daily outings and shore visits in Zodiac dinghies so as to get as close to nature as possible. They can reserve local means of transport (dugout canoes, bush taxis, local buses, etc.) in order to reach essential sites for hiking (volcanoes, nature reserves, etc.) or for visiting isolated villages. Indeed, the close relationships that our teams have been able to build with the local communities will enable you to share the life and ancestral customs of these peoples for a few hours. The naturalist guides also supervise snorkelling tours to discover the coral reef fauna. On board, the naturalist guides will share their knowledge during various conferences on fauna, the history of the great explorations, geology and climatology…

In the early afternoon, you will depart in direction to the Château de La Bourdonnais for a full guided visit.

The Labourdonnais estate is one of those large agricultural lands that has been owned by sugar planters through many generations. This property is a tribute to Mahé de Labourdonnais, one of the greatest and most famous French governors, who endeavoured to promote the Mauritian soil. It was, from the very start, a concession, then an agricultural estate, and the name of a legendary house on the island.

Very few estates in Mauritius have managed to preserve the character of yesteryear but Labourdonnais has remained in the same family. Through a visit along that unique and magical place, and via a series of explanatory texts and interactive displays, you are invited to explore the elegant lifestyle of the colonial era, the rhythm of life on sugar plantations and to discover its economic activities.

You will visit the exceptional Labourdonnais residence, example of the colonial architecture of the Ile de France (Mauritius) and Bourbon (Réunion). The French and Mediterranean culture have influenced the Creole architecture of Georgia and South Carolina.

After visiting the château, you could stroll through the lush gardens and old orchads where large fairways invite you for a promenade, displaying the horticultural wealth of the region.

Distillerie de Labourdonnais is part of your visit and you will learn about the old techniques of agricultural rum and the production of this treasured spririt.

The tour ends delightfully with the opportunity to taste local products before proceeding to Port Louis.

You will be transferred to the pier, to embark on board your ship.

You will proceed first to the Botanical Garden for a visit to a colony of Aldabra giant land tortoises, fruit bats and a chance to view the world famous “Coco de Mer” (double coconut) palm and wander the grounds full of plants and flowers both endemic and introduced to the Seychelles.

You will then drive up the spectacular Sans Soucis Road to Mission Lodge View Point. You will be amazed by the lush vegetation which covers Mahé’s mountainous interior. A photo stop will be made at Mission Lodge to get an overview of the coast of Mahé and Victoria the “world’s smallest capital”. While travelling, you will learn about the history of the Seychelles islands, once a haven for pirates and Corsairs, and also Mahé named by Mahé de La Bourdonnais, a French governor of Mauritius.

The replica was brought to Victoria in 1903 when the Seychelles became a crown colony. Important information

Expedition programmes include activities such as Zodiac® outings and landings (sometimes with "wet landings"), moderate walks to more active hikes, all accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides.

Ports of call, visited sites, outings and landings will depend on weather conditions, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.

Travelling to isolated regions is an exhilarating experience. In remote areas, please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is extremely expensive. Without adequate medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid with your personal funds. We urge you to subscribe to full coverage insurance, choose your insurance company very carefully, be extremely vigilant and ensure your insurance is fully comprehensive, especially if you are insured by your credit card. PONANT offers an insurance contract with extensive guarantees, please contact us for more information.
