PONANT is inviting you to enjoy an unforgettable experience along the Amazon River, on a 13-day expedition cruise. Aboard Le Champlain, immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of this mythical and impressive river in the heart of Brazil, following a brand-new itinerary.

You will board your ship in Manaus, a surprising city of almost 2 million people, at the confluence of the Amazon and the Rio Negro. You will then sail along the river from west to east, to discover the many treasures it conceals: dense and varied vegetation, tropical fruit, a host of animal species, hamlets, stilt houses, local boats… In spite of the developments brought by modern civilisation, this ecosystem – the only one of its kind in the world – remains the cradle of a protected tropical life, which you will be fortunate to witness.

At the confluence of the Tapajos and Amazon rivers, around Santarem, you might be lucky enough to spot some extraordinary pink river dolphins (also called botos).

Le Champlain will then sail to the beautiful city of Belém, where you will be captivated by the huge open-air market and the walls of Forte do Presépio.

You will then leave the earth-coloured waters of the Amazon to join the Atlantic Ocean and make your way to the Salvation Islands, before disembarking in Cayenne, in French Guiana.

Subject to weather and river conditions. The expedition highlights, encounters with the wildlife and itineraries described above illustrate possible experiences only and cannot be guaranteed.

    7 December 2018 – Silves, Amazonia

    Manaus, Amazonia

    Embarkation 07/12/2018 from 16H00 to 17H00 . Departure 07/12/2018 at 18H00 .

Once called the “Paris of the Tropics” due to the prosperity it experienced thanks to the rubber trade, Manaus is fascinating for its immoderation. Situated 1,500 km away from the mouth of the Amazon, this gigantic city with elegant middle-class houses and superb colonial buildings, is also a departure point for exploring the Amazon Rainforest. The surrounding area is famous for offering a surprising sight: the meeting of the dark waters of the Rio Negro and the muddy waters of the Rio Solimoes which run side by side over several kilometres without mixing and then join to form the Amazon. At this port of call, you will also be able to observe the várzea, an ecosystem made up of forests that are flooded for part of the year.

    8 December 2018 – Silves, Amazonia

    8 December 2018 – Silves, Amazonia

    Arrival 08/12/2018. Departure 08/12/2018.

Situated on the edge of Lake Canaçari, which is fed by the Urubu River, a tributary of the Amazon, Silves is one of the oldest municipalities in the region. Established in the 17th century by Jesuit missionaries, it was later the site of confrontations between the indigenous populations and the Portuguese settlers. Now part of the Greater Manaus metropolitan area, Silves boasts an exceptional natural setting combining tropical rainforest and rich aquatic diversity. It is the home of the Caboclos, people of mixed Indigenous Brazilian and Portuguese ancestry, who subsist mainly on fishing. You will also discover Botos, which was given its name by the local population in reference to the famous pink dolphin, emblematic animal of the region.

    9 December 2018 – Botos, Amazonia

Now part of the Greater Manaus metropolitan area, Silves boasts an exceptional natural setting combining tropical rainforest and rich aquatic diversity. 9 December 2018 – Parintins, Amazonia

    9 December 2018 – Parintins, Amazonia

Arrival 09/12/2018 early afternoon. Departure 09/12/2018.

400 km upstream of Manaus, discover Parintins, known for its traditional festival, “the Boi Bumba”, celebrating cultural diversity in the Amazon. Over the last three days of June, the city is divided into two groups that compete against each other: the “Caprichosos” in blue and the “Garantidos” in red. Although the choreographies might suggest a reproduction of the Rio Carnival, the themes presented all relate to the Amazon. A performance from this festival will be presented when the ship calls here: an opportunity to admire the beauty of the dancers’ costumes and let the rhythm of the music take you over.

Over the last twenty years or so, the economy of Santarém, which is now Amazonia’s third biggest city after Manaus and Belém, has regained some momentum thanks to soybean cultivation and tourism. Renowned for its forests and especially for the small village of Alter do Chão with its beaches worthy of the Caribbean, Santarém offers a wonderful opportunity to discover the Amazonian ecosystems.

Aboard your ship, sail this river and journey deep into the heart of this green paradise, the Amazon, the rich exuberance of a wild symphony. From the Andes, the Amazon fights its way between Peru and Colombia to reach Brazil where it achieve its majestic breadth. This exceptional site is an unspoiled and secret refuge for thousands of animals and the handful of tribes who live here, far from any contact with the city, in harmony with nature. Aboard our Zodiac® dinghies, do not miss the daytime and nocturnal excursions to experience the surrounding environment.

Once infamous for being the site of a jail with very harsh conditions of detention, where Alfred Dreyfus was exiled, today they are a peaceful place where coconut palms cast shade over the crystal-clear waters. During your cruise, we invite you to make a timeless journey to visit the many remains of the prison that are still visible, including cells and the abandoned hospital.

    TROPICAL EXPEDITION

    TROPICAL EXPEDITION

Discover the unique concept of PONANT tropical expedition cruises: explore the world’s extreme regions while enjoying luxurious comfort and service.

    A luxury expedition voyage

Choosing a PONANT expedition cruise means choosing a state of mind: the alliance of elegance and authenticity, of exploration and comfort, of adventure and refinement… The comfort of your ship and your stateroom, personalised and attentive service, refined gastronomy: a very special atmosphere that we take great care to maintain. In the heart of the archipelagos of Oceania or the atolls of the Indian Ocean, along the wild coastlines of Central America or Australia, our luxurious services will ensure that your expedition cruise is an unforgettable experience.

    PONANT, expedition cruise specialists

With almost 20 years of experience in the extreme regions, PONANT, the world’s number 1 polar cruise company, is also a real specialist in the planet’s most remote tropical regions. Our latest-generation fleet has the most modern technology to guarantee both your safety and respect for the regions visited. The size of our ships means we can get as close as possible to areas that are difficult to reach, offering a privileged access to preserved sites. Our flexibility enables us to adapt to the surprises inherent to these expedition itineraries.

    Professional expedition teams, varied activities

After scouting missions in the field, our Expedition Leaders and their teams of naturalist guides design exceptional itineraries in the tropical regions. During the cruise, they organise daily outings and shore visits in Zodiac dinghies so as to get as close to nature as possible. They can reserve local means of transport (dugout canoes, bush taxis, local buses, etc.) in order to reach essential sites for hiking (volcanoes, nature reserves, etc.) or for visiting isolated villages. Indeed, the close relationships that our teams have been able to build with the local communities will enable you to share the life and ancestral customs of these peoples for a few hours. The naturalist guides also supervise snorkelling tours to discover the coral reef fauna. On board, the naturalist guides will share their knowledge during various conferences on fauna, the history of the great explorations, geology and climatology…

    Important information

Expeditions programs include activities such as Zodiac® outings (sometimes with "wet landing"), moderate walks to more active hikes. All this accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides. Certain zodiac® outings will not allow for landings just cruising. Landings will depend on weather conditions, position of ice and winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time.

Travelling to polar/isolated regions is an exhilarating experience. The raw beauty and untouched wilderness offer an unusual chance to experience a place where there is little evidence of human presence. Inevitably, there are some consequences that come with such remoteness: please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is highly expensive. Without the necessary medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid from with your personal funds. We urge you to subscribe a full coverage insurance, choose your insurance company very carefully and be extremely vigilant and ensure your insurance is fully comprehensive.

Taking into consideration the unusual and exceptional character of expedition itineraries, the calls shown are an indication only. The final route will be confirmed by the Captain and Expedition Leader, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. Their decision will be subject to that of local authorities and/or the expert pilots present on board during the navigation in polar and /or isolated zones.
