Unspoiled nature, encounters with populations respecting their ancestral traditions, observation of exceptional biodiversity: this is the programme that PONANT is proposing during an all-new 8-day circuit in the Bissagos Islands. You can experience this exceptional cruise, tinged with adventure, aboard Le Dumont-d’Urville.

The Bissagos archipelago, located off the coast of Guinea-Bissau, is one of the most preserved and protected on the planet. Classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it is made up of 88 islands, most of which are uninhabited. Nestling in the heart of an environment which often remains untouched by humans, they offer the rare visitors who explore them the opportunity for a unique and authentic experience.

During your Zodiac® excursions, you will get as close as possible to nature, between pale-sand beaches, mangrove stretching as far as the eye can see, savannah, palm trees and baobabs. Birds of prey, pelicans, monkeys, sea turtles, crocodiles, saltwater hippos and all kinds of snakes are at home here.

During your trip, you will also meet the Bidyogo people, particularly on the islands of Caravela, Carache and Orango. This will be an opportunity to discover their way of life, which has not changed for thousands of years. Theirs is a matriarchal society centred on the sacred.

The encounters with the wildlife described above illustrate possible experiences only and cannot be guaranteed.

Choosing a PONANT expedition cruise means choosing a state of mind: the alliance of elegance and authenticity, of exploration and comfort, of adventure and refinement… The comfort of your ship and your stateroom, personalised and attentive service, refined gastronomy: a very special atmosphere that we take great care to maintain. In the heart of the archipelagos of Oceania or the atolls of the Indian Ocean, along the wild coastlines of Central America or Australia, our luxurious services will ensure that your expedition cruise is an unforgettable experience.

    PONANT, expedition cruise specialists

With almost 20 years of experience in the extreme regions, PONANT, the world’s number 1 polar cruise company, is also a real specialist in the planet’s most remote tropical regions. Our latest-generation fleet has the most modern technology to guarantee both your safety and respect for the regions visited. The size of our ships means we can get as close as possible to areas that are difficult to reach, offering a privileged access to preserved sites. Our flexibility enables us to adapt to the surprises inherent to these expedition itineraries.

    Professional expedition teams, varied activities

After scouting missions in the field, our Expedition Leaders and their teams of naturalist guides design exceptional itineraries in the tropical regions. During the cruise, they organise daily outings and shore visits in Zodiac® dinghies so as to get as close to nature as possible. They can reserve local means of transport (dugout canoes, bush taxis, local buses, etc.) in order to reach essential sites for hiking (volcanoes, nature reserves, etc.) or for visiting isolated villages. Indeed, the close relationships that our teams have been able to build with the local communities will enable you to share the life and ancestral customs of these peoples for a few hours. The naturalist guides also supervise snorkelling tours to discover the coral reef fauna. On board, the naturalist guides will share their knowledge during various conferences on fauna, the history of the great explorations, geology and climatology…

You will be greeted by our local English-speaking representative off the flight selected by PONANT. You will be directly transferred to the Radisson Blu hotel.

    Hotel check-in.

    Day 2 - Dakar

After your breakfast, you will take the direction to Dakar. Driving through the West Corniche Coastal road, you will stop to see the African Renaissance Monument, a magnificent 160-foot-tall monolith weighing in at 190 tons. Reverend Jesse Jackson was among the dignitaries who attended the opening of statue in 2010 to celebrate Senegal's 50 years of independence from France. Loved by some and reviled by others, the copper and bronze statue was made by the North Koreans and cost $27 million. Senegal is a land of lighthouses, and a standout among them is the Mamelles Lighthouse, your next destination. Mamelles is one of the world's great lighthouses. It stands on the Cape Verde Peninsula (for which the offshore islands belonging to Portugal are named) and guides ships around the treacherous western tip of Africa. Mamelles' light range is almost 36 miles, but the structure itself may soon fall victim to the rapid, uncontrolled erosion of the coastline. Enjoy a quick photo stop at the Deity (Divinity) Mosque before you head to Pink Lake for lunch.

This morning, you will travel approximately 1½ hours to reach Lake Retba, famous for its unusual pink water - you really have to see it to believe it. The lake is shallow and warm and is surrounded by white foam and palms. Its very high level of salinity means that everything floats on the surface. Workers crush the thick crust of salt that lies on the lake-bed and gather the salt to sell. Sand dunes, a baobab forest and traditional villages with thatch-roofed huts line the shores of the Pink Lake. You will cross over sand dunes and through bush during your drive around the lake. You will drive through the Rally Paris-Dakar pathway up to the ocean. Finally, stop for a brief encounter with the chief of Fulani Village. He will let you visit his dwelling hut and will explain the villagers' way of life.

Lunch (buffet) will be served after the tour around the lake and surroundings, in a Mauritanian Tent on the beach, in front of a beautiful landscape. This Tent called "Khaima" is all made with African materials and fabrics. An Entertainment (with a folkloristic group) will be offered by our local representative before or during lunch.

After your nomad traditional lunch, you will be transferred to the port to embark your ship.

    – Cruise on board your ship –

    Disembarkation Day: Gorée Island/Dakar

After disembarkation procedures are completed, you will be greeted at pier by our local representative.

Your day will be spent visiting the evocative Gorée Island. Just three kilometres from Dakar, this little island is a haunting reminder of 350 years of the slave trade. Indeed, it was the biggest holding centre for slaves brought in from all over West Africa, and has become a symbol and UNESCO World Heritage site.

From Dakar port, take the ferry for the 25-minute crossing. The visit is on foot starting at the House of Slaves, the most visited museum in Senegal which still evokes the poignant reality of one of the darkest periods in the history of the world. You then move on to the Church of Saint Charles de Borromée, one of only two buildings on the island. Its construction was financed by the signares of Gorée in 1830, the original church having been burned down by English soldiers on Christmas night 1799. From there you walk up to the Castle on a rocky plateau covered in fortifications, a reminder of the wars fought between Europeans (English, French, Portuguese and Dutch) to gain control of the island. The Castle offers a fine panoramic view of Dakar. You then cross the island via the market and colourful, picturesque streets to reach the History Museum located in the former Fort d’Estrées. Here you can trace Senegal’s history from prehistoric times to independence and the various migrations that have taken place over the centuries. Not far from here is the Chevalier de Boufflers (or similar) restaurant where you will have a typical local lunch before catching the ferry back to Dakar.

You will stop at the African Renaissance Monument and continue to the Mosque of Divinity, located on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, before reaching the Soumbédioune Handicraft Village Market for some time at leisure.

Dinner will be served in the Dagorne restaurant (or similar) before you are transferred to Dakar airport in connection with the departure of the flight selected by PONANT.

Approximate flight duration: 5 hours and 30 minutes.

The day after disembarkation: Arrival in Paris.

    • Senegal is part of the West African financial community area. The local currency is the CFA franc which has a fixed exchange rate with the euro (1 CFA franc = 0.00152 euro, 1 euro = 655.957 CFA). US dollars are widely accepted.
    • The official language is French, which is understood by the majority of people, and there are about a dozen local languages and several dialects. Greetings are very important and the easiest way to avoid making a mistake is to use traditional Arab greetings (Salaam aleikoum, Aleikoum asalaam).
    • We also recommend you only drink bottled mineral water.
    • Please take note of the local and basic nature of the installations and equipment used during the dunes outing to Pink Lake. Lunch will be served under a Kaïma tent. The 4-wheel drive vehicles are open and non-air-conditioned but have a canopy to protect you from the sun.

    Important information

Expedition programmes include activities such as Zodiac® outings and landings (sometimes with "wet landings"), moderate walks to more active hikes, all accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides.

Ports of call, visited sites, outings and landings will depend on weather conditions, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.

Travelling to isolated regions is an exhilarating experience. In remote areas, please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is extremely expensive. Without adequate medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid with your personal funds. We urge you to subscribe to full coverage insurance, choose your insurance company very carefully, be extremely vigilant and ensure your insurance is fully comprehensive, especially if you are insured by your credit card. PONANT offers an insurance contract with extensive guarantees, please contact us for more information.
