    PONANT invites you to experience a musical cruise on the Mediterranean, run in partnership with Radio Classique.  

    For 8 days, Le Lapérouse will sail along the Italian coast and the shores of Spain via Corsica and the Balearic Islands. Under the leadership of Alain Duault, this cruise will pay tribute to Chopin.  

    You will call at the ‘Isle of Beauty’ to discover Bonifacio, its upper part and its cliffs that tower above the sea.  

    The ship will sail to the Balearic Islands and make a first stop in Menorca. The gigantic proportions of Mahon’s natural harbour will astonish you. Along the streets lined with colourful houses, you will discover the Santa Maria Church and its monumental organ.

    You will sail to Majorca in the wake of Chopin and George Sand, to discover the Valldemossa Charterhouse, where they both stayed.

    After calling in Barcelona, Le Lapérouse will once again make its way to the Italian coast. At Marina di Carrara, famous for its white marble, you will be able to admire the Ducal Palace and its 16th century dome.

    You will be welcomed by the colourful houses of Mahon, its narrow streets and pretty squares that appear as you stroll around this richly contrasting city. Mahon reveals its different neighbourhoods, alternating between monuments, villas and white buildings. Discover the Santa Maria church, a building of neo-gothic inspiration, rebuilt in the 18th Century. It is worth a visit to see its monumental organ with more than 3,000 pipes and four keyboards. Around the Carmen church you will find a local market, full of stands selling avarcas, typical Menorcan sandals originally made by peasants. Over the years, it has been marked by some of the greatest artists, such as Picasso, Miró or Gaudí, most of whose work has been listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Take the time to stroll along the Ramblas and enjoy the gentle, typically Mediterranean lifestyle of the capital of Catalonia.

    During your day at sea, make the most of the many services and activities on board. Treat yourself to a moment of relaxation in the spa or stay in shape in the fitness centre. Depending on the season, let yourself be tempted by the swimming pool or a spot of sunbathing. This day without a port of call will also be an opportunity to enjoy the conferences or shows proposed on board, to do some shopping in the boutique or to meet the PONANT photographers in their dedicated space. As for lovers of the open sea, they will be able to visit the ship’s upper deck to admire the spectacle of the waves and perhaps be lucky enough to observer marine species.     Marina di Carrara is a seaside resort on the Tyrrhenian Coast, which enjoys a temperate climate year round. It is also the port from which the marble from the nearby Carrara quarries is exported. This extremely pure, very white and very fine-grained marble has been used for sculpture and architecture since Roman antiquity.  It was used to create some of the most stunning masterpieces from the Renaissance period, such as the statue of David by Michelangelo, who would travel to Carrara to choose his own blocks. Don’t miss the visit to the fascinating marble museum and to the actual quarries, where you will be able to admire the titanic landscape shaped by the extraction of the enormous blocks of marble.

    • Passport valid for at least six (6) months beyond the completion of your trip. Passport must contain at least two completely clear, blank, unused visa pages for each visa required, not including any amendment pages. Visa pages with stains or ink from other pages in the passport are not usable. Guests who deviate from the scheduled embarkation or disembarkation port should research the foreign entry requirements for the port country. Due to government regulations, regrettably, PONANT will have to deny boarding to any guest who fails to obtain the appropriate travel documentation for this trip.

    • Warning about the use of drones: the use of drones aboard PONANT ships, whether they are sailing at sea, at a port of call or anchored, is strictly forbidden. The use of drones on land in the Arctic and Antarctic regions is also strictly forbidden by international polar regulations. In other regions, it may be possible to use drones on land if permission has been obtained from the relevant authorities of each country and each region travelled through, as well as a pilot’s licence that should be obtained from your home country. Passengers are responsible for obtaining these permits; they should be able to present them at all times. Passengers who do not obtain these authorisations expose themselves to the risk of legal proceedings.

    Alain Duault

    Alain Duault

    The novelist, poet, journalist, musicologist and radio and television presenter Alain Duault has been sharing his passion for and knowledge of classical music for more than 30 years. Considered to be one of the greatest opera specialists in France he is now President of the Prix Pelléas jury, and has been made an Officier de la Légion d’Honneur and Commandeur des Arts et Lettres.

    Alain Duault studied literature, philosophy and psycho-analysis in Paris, then musicology and piano. His first TV appearance was as a guest of Bernard Pivot for his book of poems, Colorature. This led to a number of radio programmes dedicated to classical music, notably on RTL, the radio station where Alain Duault would be “Mr Classical Music” for 22 years, before joining Radio Classique with daily slots . A role that he also took on for the France 3 television channel, presenting a number of exceptional programmes (masterclasses with Ruggero Raimondi in the Salle Gaveau, Musiques en fête at the Chorégies d d’Orange festival…).

    In 1999, he conceived and presented Intégrale Chopin (225 works, 60 pianists), broadcast on France 3. Then in 2001, he wrote and performed an ambitious and very popular show, Verdi, une passion, un destin (with Jean Piat and 250 musicians). In the wake of this success, he wrote and performed two other shows:  Victor Hugo, la légende d’un siècle in 2002 and Rencontre avec George Sand (with Marie-Christine Barrault) in 2004 and 2005.

    Alain Duault also puts his writing skills to the service of classical music. The author of a number of books, including Dans la peau de Maria Callas, (Le Passeur Editeur, 2014, pocket edition, 2017); Dictionnaire amoureux illustré de l’Opéra (Plon Gründ, 2016). Ce léger rien des choses qui ont fui, poetry (Gallimard 2017), he also writes editorials for Classica.

    Yves Henry

    Both pianist and composer, Yves Henry was trained at the Paris Conservatoire in the 1970s-80s, where he studied with Pierre Sancan and took courses in chamber music, accompaniment and choral direction as well as classes in writing, obtaining a total of seven premiers prix by the age of 22. The same year, after having worked with Aldo Ciccolini for three years, he won First Grand Prize at the Robert Schumann International Competition in Zwickau. He is now recognized as one of the specialists in the interpretation of Schumann, Chopin and Liszt, in particular owing to his experience with instruments from the Romantic era.

    Professor at the Paris Conservatory and the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional in Paris, member of the programme committee of the Chopin Institute in Warsaw on the occasion of the Chopin bicentennial in 2010, and honorary member of the Japanese Piano Teachers Association, Yves Henry gives numerous recitals the world over, primarily devoted to composers of the Romantic era. Regularly invited for master classes at universities in the USA, Japan and China, he sits on juries of important international competitions (Monte-Carlo Piano Masters, Dvořák Piano Competition in Nelahozeves, Robert Schumann International Piano Competition in Zwickau, International Frédéric Chopin Competition in Warsaw). He also devotes himself felicitously to chamber music alongside his violinist brother and various partners (Michel Portal, Karl Leister, Ivry Gitlis, Brigitte Engerer, Augustin Dumay, Gary Hoffman, soloists of the Orchestre de Paris, Michel Lethiec, the Elysées and Modigliani quartets…) and is at the origin of several productions combining literature and music with actresses Marie-Christine Barrault and Brigitte Fossey.

    In January 2010, he was promoted to the rank of Officer in the Order of Arts and Letters by Frédéric Mitterrand, Minister of Culture, received the Gloria Artis award from the Polish government for his contribution to the Chopin Year in France, and was one of the personalities to be included in the 2010 Who’s Who in France. In January 2011, he succeeded Alain Duault as President of the Nohant Chopin Festival.

    In the course of the 2015-16 season, he will give concerts in Germany, Japan, France, Poland, Romania, Hong-Kong and the United States and is invited to participate in the jury of the Schumann International Piano Competition in June 2016 in Zwickau.

    Discography: a 2-CD set and 1 DVD of Chopin's 24 Preludes, Op.28 in two versions: one on an 1837 Pleyel, the other on a modern concert piano (2008). A Liszt recital (2011). A 2-CD set devoted to the reconstitution of Chopin's last concert in Paris (2014). A double-CDs set (Liszt/Schumann/Chopin) on historical pianos. In 2016, in 4 CDs, the complete works that Chopin composed or finished in Nohant and another CD with his own piano transcriptions of orchestral works.

    Emmanuel Rossfelder began studying guitar at the age of five. When he turned fourteen he won the Gold Medal at the Conservatoire of Aix-en-Provence. He was one of the lucky few to be chosen to study with Alexandre Lagoya at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique, in Paris.

    He participated in numerous international competitions and won prizes such as: "Masters of the Guitar" in Paris, the Pierre Salvi Award, given by the French Minister of Culture, the Stotsenberg prize (USA), the Walcourt (Belgium), the Benicasim (Spain), and the Vina del Mar (Chile) prizes. Emmanuel’s real passion has always been gaining proximity with his audiences and providing listeners with the opportunity to discover the range and capacity of the guitar.

    In the course of his career he has performed at the Avignon, Vichy, and Strasbourg Opera Halls, and at the famous Gaveau and Cortot concert halls in Paris. He has been invited to the festivals of Auvers-sur-Oise, La Chaise-Dieu, Le Vézère, Sully-sur-Loire and Reims, as well as the Berlioz and Young Soloists festivals. He has given concerts in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

    Emmanuel has been accompanied by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio-France, the Cannes, Nice, Auvergne, and Perrugia orchestras, la Scala di Milano, the Landmarks Orchestra of Boston, and the Baltic Chamber Orchestra.

    Recognized as a rising star of concert performance, Emmanuel has received prizes from the Natexis foundation, « Discovery » Classica, and « Classical révélations » AWARDED by Adami. In 2004 he won the prestigious « Instrumental Soloist of the Year » prize.

    Emmanuel Rossfelder has recorded 8 CDs, exploring his instrument’s repertoire and various original transcriptions. His latest recording « Virtuoso », is devoted to highly virtuoso works for solo guitar as well as bold works by Paganini…

    From Bach to Piazzolla, the Baroque decline to contemporary composition, violinist Marianne Piketty’s career is as dynamic as she is versatile, with appearances as a soloist, head of an ensemble and numerous chamber music projects. A graduate of the renowned Paris conservatoire (CNSM), and New York’s Juilliard School, she is an heir to the classical violin tradition having trained with great masters such as Itzhak Perlman and Yehudi Menuhin.

    In 2013, Marianne Piketty formed Le Concert Idéal, a balanced ensemble of young soloists and chamber musicians who pool their resources to explore music from every angle, through time and space and their relationships with literature, theatre and dance.  

    A major and very charismatic artist, Marianne Piketty stands out for her extraordinary willingness to explore new avenues and perform with others, always keen to share her passion and encourage a collective spirit.

    Precision, standards and surpassing yourself are the guiding principles for this violinist who practises her instrument at the double, pacing herself like an athlete. Marianne Piketty plays a Carlo Tononi Venetian violin dated 1685.
