Board your coach and travel across the countryside for approximately 90 minutes, from Tauranga to Rotorua, towards Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the world’s youngest geothermal valley.
A Result of the Mt Tarawera volcanic eruption in 1886, this dramatic landscape is home to spectacular volcanic craters, enormous hot water springs, beautiful geothermal features and rare plant life. The valley is also a protected scenic reserve and wildlife refuge set in native forest. Waimangu means "black water" in Maori and comes from the colour of the water that was thrown up by the famous Waimangu Geyser, which was blackened with mud and rocks.
You will follow your guide on a walk along unpaved paths, explore the geothermal wonders of Waimangu and enjoy a panoramic view over the valley. During your journey, you will learn more about the Southern Crater and the formation of the Cathedral Rocks, or the “Frying Pan” Lake, considered as the world’s largest hot spring. Waimangu and Lake Rotomahana, at the end of the valley, are fantastic examples of an ecosystem naturally re-establishing itself after a volcanic eruption.
Reboard your tour coach and travel to Te Puia. Te Puia is home to the internationally renowned spouting Pohutu geyser and boasts silica terraces, pools of boiling mud and dramatic steams vents. You will enjoy an exclusive Maori performance in the sacred meeting house, and witness the Maori culture and traditions reserved for visitors on their land. The performance includes the world-famous haka, a war dance designed to frighten an enemy and intricate hand games that are used to train young warriors.
Then, enjoy canapes whilst overlooking the world famous Pohutu Geyser, before making your way to your Maori inspired lunch. After lunch, enjoy some time visiting Te Puia's Maori Arts & Crafts Institute. Here, the students learn skills ranging from carving to weaving, along with creating flax skirts and patterned bodices, and you will witness all this first-hand.
