PONANT invites you to discover idyllic islands and atolls, following an itinerary in the Indian Ocean. From Sri Lanka to the Seychelles via the Maldives, set sail for an 13-day cruise aboard Le Champlain.
You will board Le Champlain in Colombo, the Sri Lankan capital located at the crossroads of the sea trade between Europe and Asia. You will be able to admire the fortifications of the old town of Galle, testimony to its Portuguese and Dutch heritage and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Your ship will then set sail to the Maldives. Those island specks scattered across the warm, blue waters of the Indian Ocean, transport you to a marvellous and infinitely beautiful world. The archipelago counts some 1,200 islets and 19 atolls protected by coral reefs, offering travellers their transparent waters, home to millions of brightly coloured fish.
At the heart of the archipelago, discover Baa Atoll. This exceptional site, listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2011, is a perfectly preserved tropical paradise. The fifty-odd islets that make up the atoll offer visitors long stretches of white sand and beaches with crystal-clear water, lined with palm trees.
You will then chart a course for the magnificent Seychelles. In Praslin, don’t miss the chance to visit the Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve. There you will find sea coconuts, gigantic endemic fruits with a very evocative shape, nicknamed the “love nut”.
Le Champlain will then sail for the island of La Digue, a veritable post card of the Seychelles: palm trees, granite rocks, white sand and crystal-clear waters.
Finally you will reach Victoria on the island of Mahé, where your fabulous trip in the Indian Ocean ends.
The encounters with the wildlife described above illustrate possible experiences only and cannot be guaranteed.

Process of the initiation dives (novice divers)
Before your initiation dive, your instructor will show you the equipment and will explain to you how to communicate underwater using hand gestures and how to breathe through a regulator. Once in the water, equipped with your material, you will learn how to breathe through your regulator on the surface for a couple of minutes. When your instructor feels you are ready, he will immerse you in water for about 20 minutes to a depth of 6 metres maximum.

A former trading post along the Silk Route, the old quarter of Colombo offers you the fabulous sight of its picturesque streets. The city was known to Arab, Persian and Chinese traders as early as the 8th century and this former village, nestled between two dunes, was a trading post on the mythical Spice Route. Today the economic capital of Sri Lanka, the city offers picture-postcard scenery with its beaches stretching languorously along the south-western coast of the country. Here the sand dazzles you and the sea invites you to dream...

Discover Galle, one of Sri Lanka’s oldest cities. Thanks to its commercial port, from which were exported spices and precious stones, Galle was once the country’s most major city. Colonised by the Portuguese and later by the Dutch, today it still bears traces of this colonial past. When your ship calls here, have a wander around the old town and its fortifications, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage. Built by the Portuguese at the end of the 16th century, they are perfectly preserved. To learn more about daily and rural life in Sri Lanka, do not miss the visit to the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Art Museum in Koggala, not far from Galle.

Situated some forty kilometres away from Victoria, Praslin is the second largest island in the Seychelles. Its idyllic beaches where granite rocks nestle in immaculate sand correspond perfectly to how we imagine the Seychelles to be. They invite visitors to dive into the turquoise waters, which are ideal for snorkelling. In the centre of the island, hidden in the heart of a stunning tropical rainforest, lies the Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this veritable plant sanctuary, several endemic species of palm trees can be observed, as well as the famous sea coconut, which can weigh up to 20 kg and is sometimes called “coco fesse” because its shape calls to mind a pair of buttocks.
Arrival 12/02/2023 early morning
Departure 12/02/2023 late afternoon
La Digue Island is a veritable concentration of all the beauty of the Seychelles. Located 6 km south-east of Praslin, this small piece of land that looks like paradise is the third-largest island in the Seychelles, despite its modest size (5 km by 3 km)! Turquoise waters just asking you to swim in them, lush vegetation sheltering giant tortoises, beaches of fine sand fringed with coconut trees and surrounded with those emblematic large granite rocks with their pink highlights like at the famous Anse Source d’Argent: the perfect picture postcard… Authentic and preserved, the island follows a peaceful rhythm, with the only means of transport along its little roads being bikes or traditional oxcarts.

On arrival, make your way to the owner’s bungalow, sit and enjoy a cup of tea and cake while asking him about the tea process and plantation. After tea, make your way down to the plantation itself where you are able to watch the plucking process while listening to an informative explanation on the culture of tea. It was established in 1988 to protect Sri Lanka’s turtles from extinction. Since then, it has released about 3.5 million baby turtles into the wild. The hatchery pays fishermen for eggs that they collect at night along the long sandy beach. Although October to April is the main laying season, some eggs (mostly green turtles) can be found at Kosgoda throughout the year. The hatchery buries the eggs in the sand, and when they hatch, around 50 days later, the baby turtles are released into the sea at night. Only about one in 1,000 turtles survive to maturity.

Shore excursions, Pre/Post & Overlands
Travel with peace of mind as PONANT organises your day time between the airport and your port of embarkation.
Colombo
Meet at Colombo airport in the arrival hall. Look for PONANT sign. You will be greeted by our local representative off the flight selected by PONANT.
You will depart the airport by coach to discover the highlights of Colombo.
First, you will be taken to the Kelaniya Buddhist Temple on the outskirts of Colombo city at 30 minutes ‘drive from the airport. Kelaniya is an active Buddhist temple, built on a site believed to have been visited by the Buddha himself, over 2,000 years ago. It is said that here he preached his doctrine to a gathering of serpent-kings. Today human worshippers come to lay sprigs of lotus flowers around the great white dagoba, light oil lamps, and sprinkle the base of the Tree of Enlightenment with purifying water. Artistic highlights of the temple are the very fine carvings and lovely frescoes, fascinating geometrically patterned ceiling paintings, and three important images of the Buddha - two in a sitting position and one in a reclining pose. Adorning the outer walls is more light-hearted work - rows of whimsical dwarfs and elephants in bas-relief.
You will continue your exploration with a panoramic tour by coach of the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka's commercial capital and largest city, a blend of both historic value and modern vibes. Dating back over 600 years, Colombo was a trading hub for sea merchants and colonial rulers. One of the first things you will notice on your tour is how diverse the city has become. Buddhist temples, Hindu temples, mosques, and churches reflect the various beliefs practised all over the island and the beautiful facades of the old, colonial buildings contrast with the modern but elegant shopping arcades that have been developed inside. Your panoramic tour will take you past the Pettah bazar area, the Wolfendhal Dutch Church, the Old Parliament complex, The Bandaranaike International Memorial Hall, Nelum Pokuna Theatre, Viharamahadevi Park, the Independence Square, and the National Museum.
You will have lunch in a local restaurant, and then you will visit the famous Gangarama Temple, located in the heart of the city. Built in the 1800s, Gangarama Temple is the most important place of Buddhist learning and worship in Colombo. Packed with worshippers, tourists, clouds of incense, chanting, the temple complex has a library, a museum, and an extraordinarily eclectic array of bejewelled and gilded gifts presented by devotees and well-wishers over the years.
After the visit, you will be transferred to the port of Colombo, to embark on your ship.

Enhance your cruise and extend your trip with a carefully designed programme.
Take advantage of three days to discover Sri Lanka once called by sailors “the Paradise Island” because of its natural resources. Visit three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, immerse yourself in the Sri Lankan culture and enjoy your stay in a beautiful resort. This programme will be a pleasant conclusion to your cruise.
Day 1 - Colombo/Kandalama/Dambulla
Your piece of luggage for the cruise will be stored in Colombo during this Post-cruise programme. You will find it at Colombo Airport for check-in of the PONANT selected flight.
We recommend that you take a small suitcase for your stay in Kandalama.
Meet at Colombo airport in the Arrival hall. Look for PONANT sign. You will be greeted by our local representative off the flight selected by PONANT.
You will depart to Kandalama (approximately a-five-hour drive). Enjoy lunch en route at Kurunegala.
After the lunch, continue to your hotel Heritance Kandalama.
Check-in your room before you will be transferred at Dambulla where you will discover the Cave Temples.
Dating back to the first Century BC, Dambulla is a vast cave complex, converted into a rock temple which is still regarded today as one of the most important Buddhist monasteries. Covering the rock ceiling is the largest collection of paintings in Sri Lanka within a cave temple, and surrounding you is the highest number of Buddha statues found in one single place. As you wander through the temple, notice the serenity and the exceedingly well-preserved nature of the place. It is no wonder the Rock Temple has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After the visit, you will return to the hotel Heritance Kandalama.
Dinner at the hotel.
Day 2 - Polonnaruwa/Sigiriya/Kandalama
After breakfast, you will depart the hotel in the morning to explore the ancient city of Polonnaruwa.
An interesting blend of archaeological monuments, Polonnaruwa was the second kingdom of Sri Lanka and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its iconic man-made reservoir was appropriately named Parakrama Samudra, or “the sea of Parakrama”, due to its enormous size. Look out for the famous Gal Viharaya or “Rock Temple”, where one will see four colossal statues of the Buddha cut into the stone, reflecting peace, serenity and strength. Polonnaruwa also boasts ruins of ancient palaces, intricately carved moon stones and royal baths.
Then, you will then be taken to a rural village. You will enjoy a cooking demonstration of a traditional curry before lunch will be served.
After this local culture experience, you will take the road towards Sigiriya.
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Sigiriya is an enormous rock boulder rising 200 meters above the surrounding jungle. Incredibly, the rock fortress was built by King Kassyapa I in the 5th century and served as a royal citadel for more than 18 years, something that seems more astonishing with every step you climb. Pause occasionally during your ascent to admire the mirror wall, the sigiri graffiti, the famous Sigiriya frescoes and the great lion paws. Upon reaching the summit, you will immediately see that it was worth the effort. Wander through the ruins and admire the courage and work it must have taken to build this palace all those years ago - you will even find a fully functional swimming pool up there. Aside from the ruins, with the unparalleled 360-degree view of the surrounding jungle and hills, it will not just be the climb that takes your breath away.
Afterwards, drive back to the hotel.
Enjoy time at leisure before the dinner will be serve.
Day 3 - Kandalama/Colombo airport
After breakfast and check-out, you will depart to reach Colombo (approximately a-five-hour drive including a break en route).
At your arrival at Colombo, lunch will be served in a local restaurant before you will enjoy a panoramic city tour.
The city of Colombo, Sri Lanka’s commercial capital and largest city, is a blend of both historic value and modern vibes. The only producer of Virgin White tea in Sri Lanka resides about 45 minutes away from the port city of Galle at the Handunugoda Tea Estate. While originally produced in China for the Imperial Emperor, the estate has taken on the task of recreating the exact recipe and following the tradition that ensures that the only human part that comes into contact with the tea is the lips.
On arrival, make your way to the owner’s bungalow, sit and enjoy a cup of tea and cake while asking him about the tea process and plantation. After tea, make your way down to the plantation itself where you are able to watch the plucking process while listening to an informative explanation on the culture of tea. Then, head into the factory, where you are able to see the old machinery still in use. Your tour will finish with the opportunity to taste a great number of different teas including the Virgin White tea.
From here, you will make your way back to Galle to explore the fort which was originally built by the Portuguese and then modified by the Dutch during the 17th century. Even today, after 400 years of existence, it looks new and polished with reconstruction work done by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka.
Step back in time, as your guide brings the colourful history of the fort to life, during a guided walking tour. Weave your way along the narrow lanes, pass through the courtyard to the Dutch Hospital shopping complex, before viewing the Lighthouse, Clock Tower and the Ramparts.
Before heading back to the pier, enjoy some time at leisure inside the Galle fort premises. You may like to purchase some souvenirs.

Later, you will be moved to a hotel for lunch.
After lunch take, the 1 ½ hour drive back to the pier.
