Further to the north, you will reach São Vicente and visit Mindelo, the cultural capital of Cape Verde, the birthplace of the famous singer of morna, Cesaria Évora.

    L'AUSTRAL

In May 2011, l'Austral joined PONANT's fleet. This superb mega-yacht with 132 staterooms is the result of the expertise of the Italian Fincantieri shipyard and French sophistication, as interpreted by designer Jean-Philippe Nuel. L'Austral remains faithful to our philosophy - to create a unique atmosphere, a subtle blend of luxury, intimacy and well-being.

A sleek silhouette softened by elegantly smooth contours and large, arched windows opening up to the sea and the light: so many features come together to give L’Austral her distinctive shape. Precious materials, discreet elegance and a perfect balance between chic and casual, combine to make you feel as if you are on your own private yacht. A design blending tradition and innovation, where a nautical mood has been subtly recreated. A welcoming atmosphere of relaxed sophistication revolves around shades of grey, taupe, white and ivory enlivened by touches of cinnamon, caramel and tan.. So many personal touches create the spirit of a “private yacht.”

You will encounter unique itineraries, calls inaccessible to large ships, chic and elegant yacht-like ambiance, refined and personalized service as well as gastronomic cuisine.

    Day 2 - Dakar

After your breakfast, you will take the direction to Dakar. Driving through the West Corniche Coastal road, you will stop to see the African Renaissance Monument, a magnificent 160-foot-tall monolith weighing in at 190 tons. Reverend Jesse Jackson was among the dignitaries who attended the opening of statue in 2010 to celebrate Senegal's 50 years of independence from France. Loved by some and reviled by others, the copper and bronze statue was made by the North Koreans and cost $27 million. Senegal is a land of lighthouses, and a standout among them is the Mamelles Lighthouse, your next destination. Mamelles is one of the world's great lighthouses. It stands on Cape Verde (for which the offshore islands belonging to Portugal are named) and guides ships around the treacherous western tip of Africa. Mamelles' light range is almost 36 miles, but the structure itself may soon fall victim to the rapid, uncontrolled erosion of the coastline. Enjoy a quick photo stop at the Deity (Divinity) Mosque before you head to Pink Lake for lunch.

On the way, you will stop to take pictures of Baobab-Trees.

This morning, you will travel approximately 1½ hours to reach Lake Retba, famous for its unusual pink water-you really have to see it to believe it. The lake is shallow and warm and is surrounded by white foam and palms. It is very high level of salinity means that everything floats on the surface. Workers crush the thick crust of salt that lies on the lake-bed and gather the salt to sell. Sand dunes and traditional villages with thatch-roofed huts line the shores of the pink lake. You will cross over sand dunes and through bush during your drive around the lake. We will drive through the Rally Paris-Dakar pathway up to the ocean. Finally, stop for a brief encounter with the chief of Fulani Village. He will let you visit his dwelling hut and will explain the villagers' way of life.

Lunch will be served after the tour around the lake and surroundings, in a Mauritanian Tent on the beach, in front of a beautiful landscape. This Tent called "Khaima" is all made with African materials and fabrics. Lunch Buffet. An Entertainment (with a folkloristic group) will be offer by our local representative before or during Lunch.

After your nomad traditional lunch, you will be transferred to the port to embark your ship.

    – Cruise on board your ship -

    Disembarkation Day: Lisbon/Paris

After disembarkation procedures are completed, you will be greeted at the port by our local representative.

You will depart the port by coach for a tour which will give you a little taste of Lisbon. You will pass through Lisbon downtown and will continue to Belem, also known as the Discoveries quarter due to all its 16th century monuments. You will make photo stops at two of the most emblematic monuments in town, first the magnificent Jeronimos Monastery and then the Belém Tower (Torre de Belém), once departure place of the Portuguese vessels.

Lunch will take place in a Fado House. Classified as World Heritage by Unesco, Fado represents the soul of Portuguese culture. It is sung by both men and women and there are two types of Fado ; the Lisbon Fado and the Coimbra Fado. You can enjoy a live performance whilst having lunch.

You will then be transferred to the Lisbon Airport in time for check-in of the flight Lisbon/Paris selected by PONANT.

    Christian Morin

Christian Morin regularly appears on radio (currently Radio Classique’s morning show) and television. He is also a graphic designer, cartoonist, actor and clarinettist who was awarded the Sidney Bechet Prize from the Académie du Jazz. He has performed with some of the world’s greatest musicians, including Claude Luter, the Count Basie Orchestra and Claude Bolling’s Big Band.

An exciting showman, he already has legions of fans having sold one and a half million records with his signature clarinet sound drawn from the forties jazz scene.

“ A music from the depths of the soul became Gospel, Jazz, Bossa Nova and so many others, invading Brazil, New Orleans, California and New York before descending on the world, establishing itself in Paris and to our delight finding its way to the clarinet so melancholy so joyful that makes Christian Morin sing and swing.” Charles Aznavour.
