Jacques Rougerie
A visionary architect, of international renown, passionate about the sea, Jacques Rougerie, born in 1945, has based, for more than 30 years, his research and his realisations on bionic and biomimetic architecture, that takes into account the principles of sustainable development. His prospective vision and his interest in new technologies allow him to propose a better integration of the habitat in its natural environment, in particular the littoral and marine ones. Thus he draws his inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci and his faith in the genius of human spirit.
Jacques Rougerie builds underwater habitats and laboratories, marine research centres, vessels with see-through hulls, sub-aquatic museums and imagines major projects always linked to the ocean. He also designed Blue Eye, the first multi-sensory underwater lounge within the hull beneath the water line, which will be integrated within six PONANT ships.
Hence he combines his two passions - the sea and architecture. He was elected in 2008 to the Institut de France – Academy of Fine Arts and like a true undersea explorer, he tests his own creations and has even lived several times in underwater habitats, famously participating in the world record achievement of living 71 days under the sea in the United States.
His flagship projects, Sea Orbiter and the City of Meriens are a synthesis of his innovative researches in marine and subsea architecture. Inspired by the imaginary work of Jules Verne, he has adopted his motto: "Anything one man is able to imagine, other men can make it real".
“It is from the ocean that will be born the destiny of civilisations to come.”

Located on the western coast of Martinique, Fort-de-France will amaze you by the splendour of its bay, a magnificent cut-out in the coastline, considered as one of the most beautiful in the world. At the harbour mouth, on its strip of land, fort Saint-Louis overlooks the capital city of Martinique. If you climb up to it, you can see some breath-taking views. Saint Louis Cathedral and the Schoelcher library bear witness to a secular history, intimately linked to the island’s story. Why not try some fresh coconut at the colourful Grand Marché. Two really pleasant places you can take a breather in, right in the heart of the city, are the garden of Balata and the Aimé Césaire park.

Depending on the season, let yourself be tempted by the swimming pool or a spot of sunbathing. As for lovers of the open sea, they will be able to visit the ship’s upper deck to admire the spectacle of the waves and perhaps be lucky enough to observe marine species. A stopover of sunny climes, Las Palmas is located on the north-east coast of Gran Canaria. A few streets away from Puerto de la Luz port, you’ll discover the vast Las Canteras beach, bordered with the town’s characteristic palms. You’ll find these palms are all over Las Palmas, in the streets and squares, especially on the plaza de Santa Ana in the heart of the historical district. It feels like you’ve travelled back in time here, as you stand looking at the tall houses beside the Santa Ana cathedral. Very close by, you can visit the Casa de Colón, a museum dedicated to the famous explorer. The museum is housed in the palace belonging to the island’s former governor. Chances are, you’ll be drawn to the covered Vegueta market to partake in some daily life along with the locals and taste some unfamiliar dishes.
