Pico is famous thanks to the Pico Mountain, a remarkable, steep-sided, dormant volcanic cone rising to 7,713 ft (2,351 m) and Portugal's highest mountain. This peak and the numerous black lava flows in different part of the island makes Pico Island the most distinctive of all islands in the archipelago.
From the pier, meet your guide and start a 5-minute walk to the Whalers’ Museum.
The museum is composed of a set of three whaling houses dating from the 19th century. This homage to the old whaling tradition presents the local ambience and lifestyle of the time. Their origins date back the 18th century, when American whalers came hunting sperm whales. This became an important activity in Lajes do Pico and on Pico in general, where workers produced whale flour and oils.
Opened in 1988, the Whalers’ Museum is unique in Europe. The permanent exhibit offers a typical example of an Azorean whaling boat, a blacksmith's workshop and the Maritime Museum of Shipbuilding. The museum also features a specialised library and document repository, a small auditorium, educational services and other activities.

All this trail stands out for its scenic and cultural diversity. It crosses an area of Protected Landscape for the wine culture, one of the most emblematic of the island, including a great active vineyard area, where the walls are in a perfect state of preservation. Classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2004, this trail is rich in elements associated to the wine culture such as “rola-pipas” (carved slopes to enable the sliding of the wine barrels to the boats), “relheiras” (tracks left by the wheels of the ox carts), the shelter houses, the wine cellars, the tide wells, among others.
From the pier, board your coach and drive to Porto do Calhau, your hiking starting point, a 50-minute drive.
You will begin your hike by following the trail near the coast, passing by a tide well. Proceed along the road, passing by Porto do Pocinho, the seaside area of Laja das Rosas, before entering in the typical area of Pico’s vineyards. Along this trail, keep a lookout for the “relheiras” but also the windmill, Moinho do Frade, rebuilt in 2003-2004 and used for grain milling. Then, you will make a stop at the village, a real portrait of current rural life on the island and enjoy time for a short stroll. You will continue on with a drive along the lake margins and continue up the crater, stopping at the Santiago and Vista do Rei viewpoints.

This peak and the numerous black lava flows in different part of the island makes Pico Island the most distinctive of all islands in the archipelago. Pico is also famous for its vineyards, walled paths, trails and land divisions interspersed with green vegetation.
Typical of this island, the tide well represents the work of the inhabitants in conquering the elements; they draw the brackish water for domestic use or for the vineyards. The trail continues near the sea, passing by Solar dos Limas and by Solar dos Salemas before ending at Porto da Areia Larga.
At the end of your hike, you will reboard your coach for a 40-minute drive to your ship.
