From the pier, board your air-conditioned coach for a 45-minute drive to the historical city of Campeche.
Coaches are not allowed within the city, so your walking tour will start at one of the main entrance gates to the city. Follow your guide and discover one of the country’s best kept colonial secrets for many years. Campeche is the only fortified city in Mexico and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is one of the most picturesque colonial centres in Mexico, but it still remains largely undiscovered by foreign tourists.
An old Mayan trading port, Campeche is the capital city of the state which bears its name. Although the Spaniards first discovered this place in 1517, the opposition they were greeted with kept them from settling here until 1540, when Francisco de Montejo (who founded nearby Merida) gained sufficient control to establish a settlement in the area. With its exports to Europe of local timber, silver, and gold, the port prospered and became the primary trading port of the Yucatan.
You will first visit the El Palacio Museum, the old customs building that has been renovated, and the most complete museum to learn about the exciting history of this old port, visit its trade and navigation exhibitions.
Continue with a visit to Campeche’s 16th century cathedral: its facade consists of a carved stone doorway with two bodies framed by two fluted pilasters on pedestals and a simple curved top. What stands out of the architecture are the slender towers, each consisting of three square bodies and smooth walls.
Enjoy some free time for shopping at the Tukulna art centre, where you will find all kinds of crafts typical of the region: hammocks known worldwide, huipiles traditional costumes, jipi (fiber) hats, and accessories made of bull horn and bone, among many others. In addition, it is located in a building dating from the 18th century. Here you will have the opportunity to have a drink while enjoying your visit.
Next, visit Casa 6 cultural center, a 18th century house with its typical architecture, patio and furnitures.
Before returning to your ship continue your walking tour towards one of the old remaining walls of what used to be the fortress that protected the city from pirates and foreign invasions.

From the pier, board your air-conditioned coach for the 1-hour drive to the archaeological site of Edzná.
Edzná was occupied very early, from around 600 BC, but it took until 200 AD before it developed into a major city. It reached its peak influence in the late Classic period, between 600 and 900, and gradually waned in importance until being all but abandoned in the early 15th century. The decline and eventual abandonment of Edzná still remains a mystery today. Edzná is a fascinating Mayan city that has a unique combination of styles and features, reflecting its position at a crossroad of trade and cultural influences. Its roof combs and corbelled arches are reminiscent of those at Yaxchilán and Palenque, several buildings are in the Puuc style and the giant stone masks are characteristic of the Petén-style architecture of southern Campeche and northern Guatemala. Located in a very dry area, Edzná also has one of the most sophisticated Mayan systems for channelling and retaining water.
Follow your guide and start your visit with the small museum displaying original Mayan stone carvings found at the site, representing deities, warriors and Mayan lords.
Then walk to the main square, step up a wall and find yourself right in front of the main building “Edificio de cinco pisos” or the 5-storey building. Continue to the Ball game court and the Temple of the Mascarones (temple of the masks).
Re-board your coach for the short drive to the Old Uayamon Hacienda, founded in the late 16th century; its main occupation was bovine and porcine breeding. Along the years Uayamon diversified its production and commercialisation. By the 18th century it was considered one of the most important haciendas in the region, due to its varied production; besides cattle and corn, henequen, sugar cane were also cultivated. Nowadays, Uayamon is a romantic hideaway amidst overgrown ruins and dense jungle. Where former workers quarters once were, are now luxurious rooms. Refreshments will be served here before your transfer back to the ship.

From the pier, board your air-conditioned coach for the one-hour transfer to Merida.
On arrival, you will visit the Museo del Mundo Maya, a world-class museum celebrating Maya culture. It houses a permanent collection of more than 1100 remarkably well-preserved artefacts, including a reclining chac-mool sculpture from Chichén Itzá and a magnificent underworld figure unearthed at Ek' Balam. Inaugurated in 2012, the contemporary building was designed in the form of a ceiba, a sacred tree believed by the Maya to connect the living with the underworld and the heavens above.
Next, re-board your coach for the short drive to the downtown area. The City of Merida is the vibrant capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan, which has a rich Mayan and colonial heritage. The city’s focal point is Plaza de la Independencia, bordered by the fortress-like Merida Cathedral and the white limestone Iglesia de la Tercera Orden. Both colonial-era churches were built using relics from ancient Mayan temples. The Casa de Montejo, a 16th-century mansion, is a landmark of colonial plateresque architecture.
During your guided walking tour, you will visit San Idelfonso Cathedral, one of the first churches built in las Americas by the Spaniards in the 16th century. Continue with La Casa de Montejo, which is today a museum. It was originally built in the 17th century by Francisco Montejo, one of the conquerors of the Yucatan peninsula. In the Governor's Palace, built in 1892, see the Fernando Pacheco mural paintings depicting the history of Yucatan. Finally stroll along Merida's central park, mixing and mingling with all the locals as they go about their daily lives and businesses.
A one-and-a-half-hour drive will bring you to a working henequen hacienda.
Sotuta de Peon is the only henequen (sisal) hacienda still showing the way this fibre (known as “the green gold” for a long time) was produced. After walking the Hacienda grounds and learning about this unique fibre and its history, you will enjoy lunch at the hacienda before heading for the one-and-a-half-hour transfer back to the ship.

From the pier, board your air-conditioned coach for the 2-hour and thirty minutes journey into the heart of the Mayan world.
You will visit Mexico’s most famous archaeological site, Chichen Itza. Named for the large cenotes (natural wells fed by underground rivers) on the site that provided the otherwise dry landscape with life-giving water, Chichen Itza is an iconic example of the elaborate Mayan architecture. An important city in the Mayan region between 600 AD and about 900 AD, Chichen Itza reflects different periods of architecture as well as different regional influences.
Follow your guide and see the most famous structures including the pyramid shaped “el Castillo” that was built in accordance with the Mayan calendar and with their extensive knowledge of astronomy. You will also visit the temple of the warriors with hundreds of carved columns depicting different warriors, the great ball court where the reward for winning was being sacrificed to the gods, the mural of skulls depicting the winners of the ball-game, the sacred cenote where human and material sacrifices may have been made to the gods, and the Caracol observatory where the art and science of astronomy were nearly perfected.
Discover why Chichen Itza has held its place in the imaginations of visitors for hundreds of years, helping to answer questions about the life of the ancient Mayas, and how it has confounded historians for centuries with its seemingly endless mysteries. You will walk through the spectacular ruins led by your guide, who will share with you facts about the buildings and their significance in the larger Mayan way of life and the legacy of their ingenious culture.
Lunch will be served at the Mayaland Hotel, which has a private entrance directly off the archaeological site. Located on over one thousand acres of landscaped grounds, enjoy your Mexican style lunch with the tranquillity offered by this exceptional location.

After disembarking, board your coach for a 2-hour panoramic drive to Uxmal, the ancient Mayan city notably known for the Pyramid of the Magician.
During your guided visit, you will learn about the unique architectural style of this site, as well as the history and legends that surround it. Entwined snakes and, in many cases, two headed snakes and masks of the rain god decorate its walls. The buildings take advantage of the terrain, using the landscape for greater overall volume and to cast more imposing shadows, thanks to additional height. Such buildings include the Pyramid of the Magician, with five levels, and the Governor's Palace, which covers an area of more than 1,200 square metres. You will visit the Pyramid of the Magician, the Nunnery, the Temple of Guacamayas, the House of the Turtles, and the Governor’s Palace.

Breakfast included. Hotel check-out.
You will depart this morning for the famous maya site of Tulum, built on a small cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. This Maya site may formerly have been known by the name Zama, meaning City of Dawn, because it stands on a bluff facing east, facing the sunrise. Upon arrival at the site, take a small train to the main entrance. Then your guide will lead you into the City to see the main buildings and show the remaining painted walls as well as the stucco decorations in front of the buildings.
After this visit of Tulum, lunch will be served in a local restaurant.
You will then be transferred to the pier of Playa del Carmen to embark the ferry to Cozumel.

After lunch, it will be time to re-board your coach for the 1-hour and thirty minutes drive back to Progreso and your ship.

After the visit, re-board your coach for a 30-minute drive to Hacienda Ochil, once a thriving Mexican hacienda specialised in the production of sisal. While enjoying a Mexican lunch, learn about the history of this once very successful trade of what was called at the time “The Green Gold”.
Next, reboard your coach for the return drive to the pier and your ship (1-hour drive).
