Surrounded by the Japan Sea and the Okhotsk Sea, Sakhalin is the largest island in the Russian Federation. Together with the Kurils, it is part of the Sakhalin Oblast. The Dutch explorer De Vries was the first European to discover the island in 1643, thinking of arriving in Hokkaido. And it was not until the end of his expedition around the world that Count de Lapérouse visited the island in 1787. This volcanic island delivers magnificent landscapes, between alpine peaks, forests, hot springs and geysers. You will undoubtedly see a varied fauna such as musk oxen, bears, polar foxes, but also seals, sea lions and whales flourish in this wild setting.
