Must-dos - Spitsbergen
The largest island on the Svalbard archipelago, Spitsbergengives you the opportunity to become acquainted with the Great North and its treasures. Polar bears, colonies of sea birds, glaciers and huge landscapes punctuate a Spitsbergen cruise, giving you a unique adventure. Here are some experiences not to miss in the Greenland sea!
Watch polar bears
It is rare to find a traveller visiting the Arctic who doesn't want to meet the king of the region: a polar bear. Thanks to its thick coat, it is master of Svalbard. A solitary male or a female with her young, your first viewing of this king of animals is always one of intense emotion.
Admire the rich fauna in Madeleine Bay
At 79° North, Madeleine Bay is one of the island's jewels. The chiselled mountains that surround it are at the origin of Spitsbergen's name, meaning “pointed mountains”. In the heart of this landscape where the fjords give way to glaciers, the white, grey and blue tones create a dense palette; nature presents its raw materials with its foamy haze, imposing rock and crackling ice. It's in this corner of the world that whales, walruses, seals, Common Eiders, terns, bears and arctic foxes make their home.
Discover Monaco Glacier
Here, part of the experience are the cracking, creaking glaciers and blocks of ice that dislocate and fall with a crash, breaking the mirror calm surface of the water. Named after the explorer Prince Albert I of Monaco, who lead two expeditions in Svalbard at the end of the 19th century, this glacier is one of Spitsbergen's most iconic. Its steep outline completes the scene with luminous blue tones catching its texture.
Visit Kongsfjorden, one of Svalbard's most beautiful fjords
Kongsfjorden, or fjord of the king, gets its name from the three “crowns”, these mountains along its edge, representing the kingdoms of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Its glacier provides icebergs in the calm waters. And in this immaculate beauty, it is not uncommon to see Bearded Seals, reindeer, Barnacle Geese and Black Guillemots.
Sail among icebergs
It's always a magical moment. One that leaves you breathless. Where nature seems at its purest, greatest, strongest. When the vessel moves between the icebergs, some of which are 60 metres high, humility is in order. Climb on board a ZodiacⓇ and approach these sparkling giants, with their blue reflections and varied shapes, and let yourself be guided by the experts, drifting through calm waters.
