Mike Louagie

Mike Louagie hails from Ostend and has always been passionate about sailing and photography. After studying at Sint-Lukas in Brussels and completing his military service with search-and-rescue helicopters in Koksijde, he became a maritime photographer and freelance journalist. His talent has earned him a solid reputation with shipping companies and shipyards. And with good reason; he became editor-in-chief of an international cruise and ferry magazine, a position that has enabled him to explore the oceans aboard many ships.

There was a turning point in his career in 2007 with his first expedition to Antarctica, followed by a collaboration with PONANT EXPLORATIONS. Working in extreme regions, he developed a strong connection with the polar regions, particularly the Antarctic.

A PONANT EXPLORATIONS photo ambassador, he leads workshops on board and shares his passion with guests. Proud of the Belgian heritage in Antarctica, he highlights the Belgica’s legendary expedition and the significance of the Antarctic Treaty. “As Belgians, we can be extremely proud of what Adrien de Gerlache and his crew achieved. In 1897, the Belgica undertook its first scientific expedition to Antarctica. This expedition is legendary and during my journeys to the Antarctic, I always give a lecture about it,” he says.

For Mike, Antarctica is so much more than a destination: it is a unique site that deserves respect and admiration. He maintains that once you set foot there, the continent never leaves you. “It is without question the most beautiful place on the planet and deserves our deepest respect. The lectures given by scientists on board are an integral part of an Antarctic expedition cruise. Because once you set foot in Antarctica, the continent never leaves you,” he concludes.
