Some trips are life changing, altering our perception of the world forever. In the waters of the Pacific Ocean, sail on an incredible odyssey taking you from the shores of Tahiti to the legendary Easter Island. Over 15 days aboard Le Boréal, (re)discover the shared mysteries of these faraway places and the captivating beauty of their extraordinary landscapes.
Leave Papeete and the island of Tahiti in your wake to reach the coast of Moorea, which awaits you and invites you to discover Polynesian culture, notably by visiting one of the island’s pearl farms that are among the treasures of the island nation. Now it is time for Le Boréal to leave behind the Society Islands to take you to the Tuamotu Archipelago and the Anaa atoll. It is said that ship captains can recognise it from a great distance as the pale green of its lagoon is sometimes reflected in the clouds!
Far from the major maritime routes, you now find yourself in the Gambier archipelago, one of the most unspoiled destinations in Polynesia. Appearing on the horizon is the small village of Rikitea where St Michael’s Cathedral stands proudly, entirely built from coral and timber.
Crystal-clear waters, abundant vegetation, endemic wildlife... You will sail to the Pitcairn Islands, a subtropical ecosystem whose capital, Adamstown*, is like a charming small village.
Finally, you will reach the intriguing and fabulous Easter Island, lying approximately 3,700 km (2,300 miles) away from the continent. This legendary land will reveal its mysteries to you through its undeciphered ‘rongorongo’ inscriptions carved into wooden tablets, but also and above all through its famous moais or ‘walking statues’ facing the endless expanse of ocean and now classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.

Expedition programmes include activities such as zodiac outings and landings (sometimes with "wet landings"), moderate walks to more active hikes, all accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides.
Ports of call, visited sites, outings and landings will depend on weather conditions, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.
Travelling to isolated regions is an exhilarating experience. In remote areas, please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is extremely expensive. Without adequate medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid with your personal funds. We urge you to subscribe to full coverage insurance, choose your insurance company very carefully, be extremely vigilant and ensure your insurance is fully comprehensive, especially if you are insured by your credit card. PONANT offers an insurance contract with extensive guarantees, please contact us for more information.

All the beauty of Polynesia is concentrated in Anaa Atoll, somewhere in the waters of the Pacific. Here, the most beautiful shades of blue and green are on display to create a heavenly setting. For the inhabitants of the Tuamotu archipelago, Anaa Atoll is intrinsically associated with the raids conducted by the so-called Parata warriors of old. In 1983, the island was completely destroyed by a cyclone that left behind only the Saint-Etienne de Tematahoa church, which remains standing elegantly on the edge of the beach to this day, against a backdrop of coconut trees. Featuring moments of relaxation and a dive into the history of Polynesia, the stop at Anaa promises to be unforgettable.

Mangareva is home to marae remains from pre-European times and other evidence of the past, but the village of Rikitea is most famous for its fascinating religious heritage dating from the 19th century. Cradle of the Catholic religion, missionaries and newly converted residents built hundreds of religious buildings between 1840 and 1870.
As you disembark at the pier, you will be greeted by locals to the sound of traditional music from the Gambier Islands and then set off on your individual tour of Mangareva. A few hundred meters from the place of your arrival, stands the whitewashed Cathedral of St Michel, erected between 1839 and 1848, one of the most ambitious projects in Laval (built entirely by hand, in coral and wood ) but also the Collège Saint Raphaël where students learn the art of mother-of-pearl engraving. These visits will be inevitable during your stroll in the village...
There are also other Laval achievements throughout the village including the coastal watchtowers and the turret which are the final vestiges of the “palace” that Laval built for the last king of the island, Maputeao. Under the leadership of Laval, Maputeao changed its name to Gregoria Stanislas and you can see her memorial in the St Pierre cemetery. Just outside the cemetery we can see the magnificent remains of the original Rouru Convent.

The tour begins heading towards Ahu Akivi located 15 km north, one of the main sites of this island. In contrast to the monumental statuary at other sites on the island, the moai at Ahu Akivi faces the ocean, it is inland and has a commanding view of the western part of the island. Its 7 moai, all about 14 feet tall and approx. 12 metric tons each, are remarkably similar. Built in 1460 B.C., probably at a time when the statue cult was beginning to unravel, it is one of the “youngest” ahu of the island and was completely restored in 1960 by archaeologist William Mulloy.
Continue your excursion towards Puna Pau, which is a quarry in a small crater or cinder cone on the outskirts of Hanga Roa in the south west of the island. Puna Pau was the sole source of the red scoria that the Rapa Nui people used to carve the pukao (topknots) that they put on the heads of some of their iconic moai statues. The stone from Puna Pau was also used for a few non-standard moai and for some petroglyphs.
At Te Pito Kura we can appreciate the tallest ever moved statue, it is not reerected and still lying in front of its platform with the huge Pukao also toppled and lying in front of the Moai. Here we find the “Navel of the World”, a basalt stone perfectly formed like a globe, which is called a volcanic bomb. It contains more iron than usual so that compasses don’t work properly. The legend says that it was brought to Rapa Nui by the famous former king Hotu Matua and that it has magical powers.
Re-join your tour vehicle to continue towards Anakena Beach, located at the north-east coast, 25 km from Hanga Piko quay. Once in Anakena it will be easy to understand why the first king of the island Hotu Matu’a landed at this beach and started one of the most amazing megalithic cultures this world has seen. Anakena has 4 Ahu sites. Two of them have been reconstructed and the other two attest to the weathering of time. The first Ahu is called Ature Huki, which was restored by Heyerdahl in 1955 and the other is called Ahu Nau Nau, which was restored by the archaeologist Sergio Rapu.

First we drive to Ahu Tongariki (restored with 15 Moais), it is the most recent and biggest restauration on the island. The platform was destroyed during a Tsunami which hit Rapa Nui in 1960, result of the earthquake in the south of the Chilean continent. The 15 statues were scattered towards Rano Raraku and the platform totally destroyed. Close by are the petroglyphs of Papa Tataku Poki.
Next highlight and only 10 minutes away is the quarry of almost all statues, Rano Raraku, 397 of them are still standing or lying on the slopes in various states of completion, some of them seemingly waiting to be moved to teir destination. This is the only volcano which consists of tuff stone, comprised volcanic ashes, a rather soft stone which was easier to carve than the other stone material you find on the Island.
Last stop is Hanga Te’e, the bay where Vaihu is situated. It is a not restored platform with tumbled Moai and Pukao. Depart from the quay, along the west coast, this guided hike will first take you to the impressive Ahu Tahai, a complex constituted of three different ahu sites: Ahu Ko Te Riku, Vai Ure and Tahai. Ahu Ko Te Riku is a beautiful single statue placed on a platform, dated back to 690 BC. The statue is in good conditions and has beautiful white eyeballs with dark pupils. Ahu Vai Ure holds five different statues whereas one of the ahu, and Ahu Tahai holds a single large moai. This complex is believed to be one of the oldest ancient statue sites on Rapa Nui.
You will continue your walk towards the village of Hanga Roa, passing the small cultural cemetery of Tahai before reaching an adjacent Rapa Nui art gallery, then the church, its art statues and stained glass windows representing Rapanui syncretism-Catholic (made by one of your naturalists) and finally one of the small craft markets located not far from there.
You will then return to the dock and your ship or freely enjoy your time on site.

Depart from the quay and reach the Ahu Vinapu, a set of ceremonial platforms. The main platform is the largest on the island. All the Moaïs present on the site are overturned here and it is therefore not so much the statues that make the interest of the site but rather the construction of the platform itself. Indeed, we find here an "Inca wall", a construction made of impressive blocks of stone perfectly adjusted, looking exactly like the types of walls found in Cusco, Peru.
Then drive up to the Ceremonial Village of Orongo, one of the most significant archaeological sites in Rapa Nui National Park and the most visited place on Easter Island. It was the centre of the birdman cult established in the 18th and 19th centuries in an attempt to restore the society after the collapse of the moai culture. Clans would gather at the village each year, and their champions would compete in a kind of triathlon to elect island's religious leader. Orongo village consists of some 53 elliptically shaped houses having shale walls and a small square entry overlooking the ocean, where the clans would live during the ceremonies. Remaining the last period of ancient times, this was an historical landmark in the Rapa Nui culture.
After a walk along the crest to the look-out, you'll drive down to the quay via the same road.

In contrast to the monumental statuary at other sites on the island, the moai at Ahu Akivi faces the ocean, it is inland and has a commanding view of the western part of the island. Its 7 moai, all about 14 feet tall and approx. 12 metric tons each, are remarkably similar.

In addition we can appreciate a small reconstruction of a former Rapa Nui village with boathouse constructions, fire places, and Mana Vai, stone circles which were used for planting trees or other delicate plants.
Then we head back to the port.
