Set out to discover the Ionian and Adriatic Seas with PONANT. During a 10-day cruise leaving from Valletta, Le Dumont-d’Urville will take you to Italy, Greece, Montenegro and Croatia.

Your ship will leave Valletta, the capital of Malta and former stronghold of the Knights of the Order of Malta and set sail towards Sicily. In Taormina, the streets will lead you to the impressive ancient theatre, where the quality of the acoustics is exceptional. And as a constant backdrop: the majestic Mount Etna! In Puglia, Gallipoli, meaning “beautiful town” in Greek, reveals its Hellenic origins and offers up its singular atmosphere, where life is good.
Le Dumont-d’Urville will reach Greece and you will discover Fiskardo, a refined and flowery island, a little-known destination in the Ionian archipelago. In Epirus, you will admire Parga and its fortress, built by the Normans in the 14th century, overlooking the pretty fishing port.
Your ship will then set sail towards Montenegro, for an unforgettable cruise in the Bay of Kotor. This impressive gap between two mountain ranges is home to a veritable inland lake with a magical atmosphere; the medieval city of Kotor and its many historical monuments are its jewels.
You will approach Vis, a little and little-known island, ignored by cruise itineraries. Fall under the spell of the historical heritage, which includes Roman ruins and Venetian architecture, of the oldest fishing port in the Adriatic. Then the national park of the island of Mljet, surrounded by a wildly beautiful coastline, will be the occasion for a timeless interlude in the shade of the green oaks and Aleppo pines, between lush vegetation and saltwater lakes. You will also be able to discover the mountain island of Korčula and its medieval city, where Marco Polo was born.
Finally, you will make a port of call at Korcula, a medieval city standing on a promontory and protected by fortifications, before heading for Dubrovnik, the appropriately named “pearl of the Adriatic”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Encircled by medieval ramparts, it is a charming city, with its red-tiled roofs, its palaces, its cloisters and its fountains that will plunge you into the heart of Croatian history.

Kid Explorers
PONANT has joined forces with the Maud Fontenoy Foundation to run its Kid Explorers children’s club.
As part of its commitment to safeguarding the oceans, during your cruise PONANT offers an activity programme for children aged 4 to 13 years on all our ships, and from 6 to 13 years on board Le Commandant Charcot to familiarise them with issues related to protecting our oceans. We have special educational kits, activity sheets and themed videos all provided by the Foundation.
Every day a team of activity leaders organises creative activities (crafts, painting, etc.), fun educational workshops, board games, introduction to meditation sessions and more, as well as activities specific to the cruise itinerary and number of participants. There are also activities ashore to prolong the experience for your Kid Explorers such as walks and treasure hunts.
The activity programme is available every day.(The precise times will be provided by animators).To best meet your needs, the schedule is adapted to fit in with your cruise programme. For more information, contact the team organising the activities.

The whole of the Maltese capital Valletta is UNESCO World Heritage listed and occupies a peninsula in the north-east of the island. From the fountain of Tritons to Saint-Elme fort, there are as many majestic streets as there are narrow staircase vennels to explore. The painted loggia and carved corbels on the tall houses will accompany you in your explorations, and you’ll rarely be bothered by traffic. You can visit the Grandmasters palace decorated with coats of arms and frescoes. Saint-John’s cathedral and the ramparts which have guarded the city since the 16th century are also among the most emblematic sites of the city. Arranged in terraces, the Barrakka Gardens will punctuate your promenade with a green and floral experience.

Located on Sicily’s eastern coast, in the province of Messina, the seaside town of Taormina is Sicily’s Saint-Tropez, boasting heritage sites, secluded beaches and luxury shopping. Another vestige from its past are the ruins of the Greco-Roman theatre. Gallipoli, which comes from the Greek kalle polis, meaning beautiful town, is very aptly named. Located on the heel of the boot, the town known as “the pearl of Puglia” has many attractions. The whiteness of its façades recalls its Greek origins while its architecture echoes its multiple influences. Its old town, perched on a limestone island, concentrates the cultural heritage of this city with a thousand faces, alternately a Roman colony, then Byzantine, the property of the Popes, Norman, under the rule of Taranto… By itself, it tells the story of the different civilisations of the Mediterranean Sea.

With your yacht at anchor, you will disembark by Zodiac in Komiža, the oldest fishing port in the Adriatic, to spend a pleasant moment in a charming setting. Far from the hustle and bustle of the city, you will set off on foot or by bike to explore the port, its old fishermen’s houses in cut stone, its small market stalls or cafe terraces and get a taste of the gentle way of life that reigns here. The ballet of the fishing boats is a reminder of the city’s essential activity and its strong connection to the sea. A few minutes from there, let yourself be tempted by a dip next to a pretty pebble beach. Opposite the turquoise water stands Our Lady of Pirates, a stunning church that shelters the oldest organ in Dalmatia. This harbour town has a very special location, presiding on a spur on the north-eastern coast of the island of Korçula. The ramparts in its medieval district provide perfect vantage points over the Pelješac peninsula. To get there, you can take the monumental staircase in the Revelin Tower. Another way is to climb the steps in the shade of palm trees from the MorskaVrata (Marine portal). As you make your way through the little streets, you’ll see the bell-tower of Saint Mark’s cathedral rise above you. This landmark will help you locate the house where Marco Polo was born. The island also has some of its own famous wines like the red Plavac and the white Posip.

Emblem of the Dalmatian coast, Dubrovnik is magnificently positioned on a rocky spur. History is sovereign here, in this ancient city, now a listed UNESCO World Heritage site. You will perhaps be surprised by the proportions of La Placa, the central drag through the city. The sheer width of it can be explained by the fact that it straddles a former lagoon. The elegant houses along La Placa are built in the legendary travertine stone. At Pile gate, you will be greeted by the statue of the patron saint of Dubrovnik, and you can admire the coastline as you walk along the ramparts. But what’s inside Fort Saint John, adjoining the outer walls? A maritime museum and an aquarium featuring rare fish from the Adriatic.
Taormina & Greek Theatre
From the pier, you will be transferred by coach to the ancient Greek town of Taormina, a 30-minute drive.
Called Tauromenium in ancient times, Taormina clings to the side of Mount Tauro and offers superb views, splashed with the vibrant colours of bougainvillea and oleanders, of the Mediterranean Sea, Isola Bella and a snow-capped Etna in the background.
A maze of narrow streets, stairs and tiny squares, Taormina has attracted many civilisations over the centuries. It is home to theatres and a gymnasium from the Greek period, an Odeon and baths from Roman times, buildings blending Arab and Norman cultures, traces of Byzantine, and villas belonging to European aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries.
You will start your excursion with a visit on foot to the historic centre. You will cross the famous Corso Umberto to discover numerous monuments from several eras, and admire Porta Catania, the Cathedral, Piazza IX Aprile and Palazzo Corvaja.
You will then arrive at Teatro Antico, a theatre built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, and almost completely rebuilt by the Romans who created a gladiatorial arena. The theatre is the second largest in Sicily after the one in Syracuse. Due to its size and acoustic quality the theatre is still used to host festivals and concerts. Seated on the stone terraces, the audience can enjoy the concert while admiring a breath-taking panoramic view of the sea, Mount Tauro and Etna.
After your visit, you will enjoy a refreshment at a local bar and some free time.

Fall under the spell of one of Puglia’s jewels, Gallipoli, listen to its history in the old town’s maze of narrow lanes and admire its historic and architectural heritage.
A visit through its enigmatic lanes is like a journey back in time, a living exploration of the cultural strata that make Gallipoli such a rare pearl. Time here sometimes seems to stand still. Near the port, where your guided tour will begin, the fisherman are hard at work. Some are gathering together the catch of the day, whereas others are repairing their nets. Off in the distance, the gates of the old town open onto a maze of narrow lanes edged withbright- and warm-coloured dwellings, where the shade of the buildings draws a mystical labyrinth. Each street corner tells its own story of this medieval city, with its multiple heritages and cultural influences. Take the time to listen to the stories told by your local guide, as you admire the surprising St. Agatha’s Cathedral, its columns and its stunning baroque frescoes.
The sun-drenched hills of Gallipoli, bathed by the blue waters of the Mediterranean, made it a regional stronghold in olive-oil production as of the 15th century. The exports of this “liquid gold” were so significant that its production was stored in the four corners of the city in underground cisterns dug out of the local limestone, called carparo. You will have the opportunity to discover the production techniques that were used in the past, as you visit one of the 35 recently renovated underground oil mills.

Stroll around Lecce, the "Baroque Florence", and discover the countless churches, palaces and monuments carved out of this soft and almost golden limestone that gives the city a glowing look, like the chubby cherubins that decorate its façades.
A veritable open-air museum, Lecce is a microcosm of Baroque splendours, located only one hour's drive from Gallipoli. The cherubins, gargoyles, plant patterns, columns and capitals, each more extravagant than the last, are legion here - to the extent that the city lays claim to its own style, the "Barocco Leccese"- since the sculptors and architects of the 16th and 17th centuries had a field day with the regional stone, a marvel of malleability and delicacy.
The Centro Storico historic centre is proof of this, with its cobbled streets and shady squares teeming with incredible rococo treasures, including the Basilica of Santa Croce - with a constellation of sublime ornaments - and the Governor's Palace.
Not far from there, on the Piazza Santa Oronzo, the palazzos, church and Roman amphitheatre dating from the 2nd century try to outdo each other with their beauty.
A few metres away, the Piazza del Duomo, in spectacular golden monochrome, proudly displays a cathedral, its bell tower and the archbishop's palace, making it one of Italy's most beautiful squares. Your exploration of the city centre will finish with a gourmet break in a café.

We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and sun protection. Appropriate clothing is recommended when visiting places of worship: trousers for men, and skirts covering the knees for women. After a 10-minute walk from the pier, you will board your coach for Ancient Nikopolis, 45 minutes drive from Parga. The city of victory was founded in 31 BC by Augustus, in honour of his victory over Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium.
Your first stop will be made at Nikopolis archaeological site. The town grew and flourished both in Roman times, which numbered about 30,000 residents but also later in Christian times. This archaeological site houses many monuments scattered over an area of about 600 ha (1500 acres). Among the most important monuments, you will admire Roman and especially Byzantine walls, a theatre, baths, aqueducts and parts of the old churches.
Then, you will visit the Nikopolis museum which contains collections of architectural parts and sculptures from the ancient city and offerings from the cemetery of Nikopolis.
Following your visit, you will board your coach for a short drive to the town of Preveza. During your walking tour around the picturesque small port, you will visit the old town streets, passing by the public market building. Built in 1939 to house the grocery and butchery shops of the city, the building houses today the Municipality’s Cultural Centre.
Then, you will walk to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Agios Charalampos (outside visit) before continuing passing by the Venetian Clock Tower. This building, built in 1752, is a typical example of the architecture of the Venetian domination. Its solar clock and the older temple contributed to the reputation of the town.
Finally, you will return to your ship in Parga.

The coach is parked 10 minutes'walk from the pier. Once you have boarded the coach, you will depart for a 1 ¼ -hour drive to Arta, region of Greece still largely untouched by tourism.
The modern town of Arta sits on the ancient site of Ambracia. An ancient Corinthian colony dating back to the 7th century B.C. which later became the capital of the Kingdom of Pyrrhus in about 295 B.C.
Arriving into Arta, who means “fortress”, you will see the famous stone bridge standing over the river Arachthos. The bridge dates back to the 17th century but it is built on the site of older bridges that go back even further to the time of Pyrrus. Legend has it that the bridge's builder, frustrated with each day’s work being ruined by the river, was advised by a bird that the problem could be solved by putting his wife in the foundations which he actually did.
You will enjoy the panoramic view from the bridge on the river and its surroundings before continuing to the Archaeological Museum of Arta, located just a short distance from the bridge and near the banks of Arachthos River.
This museum, fully renovated, houses the antiquities from the wider region of Arta and the exhibits cover a time span from the Palaeolithic to the Roman times. The collection includes funerary stelae and burial offerings from the cemeteries of ancient Ambracia finds from the ancient city of Ambracia, as well as from the "Koudounotrypa" cave, and several other sites in the region of Arta.
Arta is also famous for its Byzantine architecture and churches, the most beautiful and famous one being the church of Panagia Parigoritissa, dating from the 13th century. This church, crowned with towers and domes, is ornate with wall paintings inside dating back hundreds of years that you can discover during your visit.
Following your visit to the church take a stroll around the colourful pedestrian street of the town with its little shops and cafes before you board your coach again for your return drive to the port of Parga.

Welcome to all our young explorers! Thanks to the Kid Explorers Club by the Maud Fontenoy Foundation, children aged 4 on all our ships, and children aged 6 on board Le Commandant Charcotland up can take advantage of a wide variety of activities orchestrated by a team of activity leaders: creative activities, board games, DVD evenings, finding out what the crew do, or supervised outings and walks ashore for the 4+ age group. Helping children to learn about the oceans and the need to protect them is at the heart of our approach. So why not savour the magic of your destination in peace and quiet knowing your child is busy with an activity programme, specially designed for them in partnership with the Maud Fontenoy Foundation and posted each day in the daily program.

Valletta
Meet at the airport in the Arrival hall. Look for PONANT sign. You will be greeted by our local representative off the flight selected by PONANT.
Then, proceed to Mdina - Malta’s Old Capital, one of the locations used by the film “Black Eagle” featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and by “Game of Thrones” series. Mdina is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city, with its extraordinary mix of medieval and Baroque architecture.
Continue with the visit of Palazzo Parisio, a unique 19th century palace in the heart of the Mediterranean. Palazzo Parisio is not only another palace of the legendary Knights of St. John, but the ultimate memorial of ambitions, aspirations and pretensions of a 19th century noble family. It houses two baroque walled gardens, including a lovely orangery – a miniature Versailles.
Enjoy a small snack in the Palace.
You will then be transferred to the pier to embark on your ship.

Day 1 – Valletta

Day 2 – Valletta
Set off from your hotel with a local guide and start your day by visiting Mdina. Take a stroll through the Silent City’s narrow streets and visit the Mdina cathedral and fortifications. Mdina, Malta’s Old Capital, was used as a filming location for the movie Black Eagle, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and for the Game of Thrones series. With its extraordinary mix of medieval and Baroque architecture, Mdina is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city.
You will then proceed to a local boutique winery, where wine is produced on an estate comprising four hectares of terraced vineyards. It was built with weathered limestone blocks that perfectly blend old-world charm with practical, modern architectural touches. About 15,000 vines are planted on this estate, along with around 200 olive trees plus fig trees, carob trees, and other indigenous Maltese flora. After the visit, you will have the opportunity to taste three fine wines.
This will be followed by a fine meal at a local gourmet restaurant.
You will then be transferred to the port in time for embarkation onboard your ship.

From the pier, you will be transferred by coach to the ancient Greek town of Taormina, a 30-minute drive.
Called Tauromenium in ancient times, Taormina clings to the side of Mount Tauro and offers superb views, splashed with the vibrant colours of bougainvillea and oleanders, of the Mediterranean Sea, Isola Bella and a snow-capped Etna in the background.
A maze of narrow streets, stairs and tiny squares, Taormina has attracted many civilisations over the centuries. It is home to theatres and a gymnasium from the Greek period, an Odeon and baths from Roman times, buildings blending Arab and Norman cultures, traces of Byzantine, and villas belonging to European aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries.
You will start your excursion with a visit on foot to the historic centre. You will cross the famous Corso Umberto to discover numerous monuments from several eras, and admire Porta Catania, the Cathedral, Piazza IX Aprile and Palazzo Corvaja.
You will then arrive at Teatro Antico, a theatre built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, and almost completely rebuilt by the Romans who created a gladiatorial arena. The theatre is the second largest in Sicily after the one in Syracuse. Due to its size and acoustic quality the theatre is still used to host festivals and concerts. Seated on the stone terraces, the audience can enjoy the concert while admiring a breath-taking panoramic view of the sea, Mount Tauro and Etna.

Fall under the spell of one of Puglia’s jewels, Gallipoli, listen to its history in the old town’s maze of narrow lanes and admire its historic and architectural heritage.
A visit through its enigmatic lanes is like a journey back in time, a living exploration of the cultural strata that make Gallipoli such a rare pearl. Time here sometimes seems to stand still. Near the port, where your guided tour will begin, the fisherman are hard at work. Some are gathering together the catch of the day, whereas others are repairing their nets. Off in the distance, the gates of the old town open onto a maze of narrow lanes edged withbright- and warm-coloured dwellings, where the shade of the buildings draws a mystical labyrinth. Each street corner tells its own story of this medieval city, with its multiple heritages and cultural influences. Take the time to listen to the stories told by your local guide, as you admire the surprising St. Agatha’s Cathedral, its columns and its stunning baroque frescoes.
The sun-drenched hills of Gallipoli, bathed by the blue waters of the Mediterranean, made it a regional stronghold in olive-oil production as of the 15th century. The exports of this “liquid gold” were so significant that its production was stored in the four corners of the city in underground cisterns dug out of the local limestone, called carparo. You will have the opportunity to discover the production techniques that were used in the past, as you visit one of the 35 recently renovated underground oil mills.

Stroll around Lecce, the "Baroque Florence", and discover the countless churches, palaces and monuments carved out of this soft and almost golden limestone that gives the city a glowing look, like the chubby cherubins that decorate its façades.
A veritable open-air museum, Lecce is a microcosm of Baroque splendours, located only one hour's drive from Gallipoli. The cherubins, gargoyles, plant patterns, columns and capitals, each more extravagant than the last, are legion here - to the extent that the city lays claim to its own style, the "Barocco Leccese"- since the sculptors and architects of the 16th and 17th centuries had a field day with the regional stone, a marvel of malleability and delicacy.
The Centro Storico historic centre is proof of this, with its cobbled streets and shady squares teeming with incredible rococo treasures, including the Basilica of Santa Croce - with a constellation of sublime ornaments - and the Governor's Palace.
Not far from there, on the Piazza Santa Oronzo, the palazzos, church and Roman amphitheatre dating from the 2nd century try to outdo each other with their beauty.
A few metres away, the Piazza del Duomo, in spectacular golden monochrome, proudly displays a cathedral, its bell tower and the archbishop's palace, making it one of Italy's most beautiful squares. Your exploration of the city centre will finish with a gourmet break in a café.

After a 10-minute walk from the pier, you will board your coach for Ancient Nikopolis, 45 minutes drive from Parga. The city of victory was founded in 31 BC by Augustus, in honour of his victory over Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium.
Your first stop will be made at Nikopolis archaeological site. The town grew and flourished both in Roman times, which numbered about 30,000 residents but also later in Christian times. This archaeological site houses many monuments scattered over an area of about 600 ha (1500 acres). Among the most important monuments, you will admire Roman and especially Byzantine walls, a theatre, baths, aqueducts and parts of the old churches.
Then, you will visit the Nikopolis museum which contains collections of architectural parts and sculptures from the ancient city and offerings from the cemetery of Nikopolis.
Following your visit, you will board your coach for a short drive to the town of Preveza. During your walking tour around the picturesque small port, you will visit the old town streets, passing by the public market building. Built in 1939 to house the grocery and butchery shops of the city, the building houses today the Municipality’s Cultural Centre.
Then, you will walk to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Agios Charalampos (outside visit) before continuing passing by the Venetian Clock Tower. This building, built in 1752, is a typical example of the architecture of the Venetian domination. Its solar clock and the older temple contributed to the reputation of the town.
Finally, you will return to your ship in Parga.

The coach is parked 10 minutes'walk from the pier. Once you have boarded the coach, you will depart for a 1 ¼ -hour drive to Arta, region of Greece still largely untouched by tourism.
The modern town of Arta sits on the ancient site of Ambracia. An ancient Corinthian colony dating back to the 7th century B.C. which later became the capital of the Kingdom of Pyrrhus in about 295 B.C.
Arriving into Arta, who means “fortress”, you will see the famous stone bridge standing over the river Arachthos. The bridge dates back to the 17th century but it is built on the site of older bridges that go back even further to the time of Pyrrus. Legend has it that the bridge's builder, frustrated with each day’s work being ruined by the river, was advised by a bird that the problem could be solved by putting his wife in the foundations which he actually did.
You will enjoy the panoramic view from the bridge on the river and its surroundings before continuing to the Archaeological Museum of Arta, located just a short distance from the bridge and near the banks of Arachthos River.
This museum, fully renovated, houses the antiquities from the wider region of Arta and the exhibits cover a time span from the Palaeolithic to the Roman times. The collection includes funerary stelae and burial offerings from the cemeteries of ancient Ambracia finds from the ancient city of Ambracia, as well as from the "Koudounotrypa" cave, and several other sites in the region of Arta.
Arta is also famous for its Byzantine architecture and churches, the most beautiful and famous one being the church of Panagia Parigoritissa, dating from the 13th century. This church, crowned with towers and domes, is ornate with wall paintings inside dating back hundreds of years that you can discover during your visit.
Following your visit to the church take a stroll around the colourful pedestrian street of the town with its little shops and cafes before you board your coach again for your return drive to the port of Parga.

Day 1 - Dubrovnik
Once you have completed your disembarkation formalities, our local representative will welcome you on the quayside. You will then be transferred to the Peljesac peninsula, approximately an hour away from Dubrovnik.
The Pelješac wineries are reputed the world over for producing some of the best wines and for representing Croatia’s unique terroir and wine cultures abroad.
You will visit the Grgic Vina and Matusko Vina wineries, two family businesses run by passionate winemakers who place their experience and tradition at the heart of their products. Your morning programme will continue with the discovery of Edivo Vina, the only producer of wine aged in amphoras under the sea. These bottles and amphoras of Navis Mysterium (the mystery of the sea) are stored at a depth of 14 metres (46 feet) in a wreck, near the coast of Drace.
You will then take a private boat to Lopud Island and have lunch at a restaurant boasting uninterrupted sea views.
