The writer Jørn Riel described the polar night as a “a world apart, […] unique and fascinating, where nature reigns supreme and men keep a low profile.” When the northern winter approaches, the sun hardly rises over the horizon any more: experience an all-new PONANT journey and let yourself be guided towards a new temporality, the moment when a long dusk stretches out after the day. From the jagged coastlines of Norway to the ice-covered reliefs of Spitsbergen, dive into the heart of landscapes lit by powdered hues and set off in search of the exhilarating spectacle of the Northern Lights.
Aboard Le Commandant Charcot, a warm cocoon, savour the discreet and refined comfort of its spaces opening out onto the world. You will set sail towards the shores of continental Norway at the edge of the Arctic Ocean: welcome to Lapland! Very close to the emblematic North Cape, the northernmost point of Europe, sovereign nature delivers geological marvels in the heart of a fjord – a preserved island, dolomites and rocky rises formed during the last glaciation. The Sami, reindeer farmers and one of the last European indigenous people, live between rugged shores and snow-capped peaks, remarkable coastal cities and large wild expanses, in the Lapland territory. During warm encounters, you will discover their cultural traditions and their way of life, in harmony with the elements. Ian Dawson
Ponant Photo Ambassador, Ian, is an award-winning photographer, film maker and guide with a passion for the remote regions of our planet.
A fine art graduate, he has spent his career in the national media, both as a photojournalist and picture editor. He has covered everything from conflict, travel, the Royal Family and celebrities of stage and screen and many other commissions.
When not guiding for Ponant in the Arctic and Antarctic, his love of high and cold places regularly takes him mountaineering around the world. He is a member of The Alpine Club (the world’s first mountaineering club founded in 1857).
He has been active within Scottish Mountain Rescue for over 20 years as a medic with responsibility for training. He was recognised for his work in this field having been awarded both The Queen’s Diamond & Platinum Jubilee Medals.
Ian is a member of the Guild of Picture Editors, the British Association of Ski Patrollers, the Royal Photographic Society and the UK Mountain Leader Board. His photographic work is represented by Getty Images.
When not sharing his love of wild places, Ian lives with his family in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, Scotland.

INSULATING BASE LAYER AND WATERPROOF OUTER LAYER :
- Water-resistant parka - offered on board (not children sizes ; in case of consecutive cruises, only one complimentary parka).

Kayaking - Le Commandant Charcot
You will make the most of the sailing opportunities and weather and ice conditions to glide along on the clear waters or between the ice floes and get as close as possible to the immaculate nature of the poles. Supervised by licenced expert guides, you will try your hand in a kayak- a craft favoured by the Inuits for at least 4,000 years. The kayak was initially used for hunting and fishing; for you, it will be a means of making the most of your adventure on the White Continent or in the Far North.*

Hammerfest, located on the north-western coast of the island of Kvaloya, beyond the 70th parallel north, is often considered the northernmost town in the world. Conserved in an immaculate natural setting, this charming fishing port enjoys a rich history, as is evidenced by various vestiges dating back to the Stone Age, Napoleonic wars or the Second World War. During your port of call, you will have the opportunity to discover the Struve Geodetic Arc, a chain of triangulations stretching across Europe from Hammerfest to the Black Sea, and the first technical and scientific object to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Reconstruction Museum, meet the Sami people, or visit the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society, an emblematic spot in Hammerfest.

Halfway between Norway and Spitsbergen, you will sail not far from the coastlines of Bjørnøya, the southernmost island of Svalbard. From your ship, observe this isolated piece of land discovered in 1596 by the Dutch navigator Willem Barents, then looking for the Northwest Passage. Following a tough fight between a polar bear and the members of the expedition, he dubbed the place Bear Island. Regularly covered by a thick layer of fog, Bjørnøya shelters ameteorological station built in 1923, which is still in operation. Declared a nature reserve in 2002, the island is above all home to an enormous colony of sea birds during summer.

Considered Spitsbergen’s southernmost fjord, Hornsund is famous as one of the first places to have been visited in the region. In 1610, the British explorer Jonas Poole named it thus, after one of the members of his crew brought him a reindeer antler. Shortly afterwards, the first whalers settled in the region and contributed to shaping its history. As you move deeper into this fjord, whose total length is 30 kilometres (19 miles), you will find yourselves immersed in the beauty of the surrounding mountains, in the mystery emerging from these small drifting icebergs, and in the glory of this gigantic glacier standing proudly before you.

Longyearbyen is the capital of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago, located on Svalbard’s main island, and is the northernmost territorial capital on the planet. If you feel like you have arrived at the end of the world in Honningsvåg, it is because this is the case. Halfway between Oslo and the North Pole, it competes with Hammerfest for the status of “the northernmost town in Continental Europe”. Colourful houses light up this charming and typically Norwegian fishing port nestled in the hollows of the region’s mountainous terrain. Travellers come to stay in the village to go to the North Cape. At the end of the road, you will see the globe that indicates that you are at the very end of Europe. At this point, only the Svalbard archipelago separates you from the North Pole. There is sea as far as the eye can see. The Northern Lights, the view of the immense cliff plunging into the sea, the thousands of puffins, gannets and cormorants that spin around you: everything here is grandiose.

The small Reinoya Island, measuring scarcely 3.35 km2 (1.3 square miles), will welcome you for an unforgettable moment in the very heart of the Porsangerfjorden. Discover Lakselv, whose name means “Salmon River”, lying at the end of the immense Porsangerfjorden. As its name indicates, this small village is renowned for the salmon fishing in the waters of its river, which are brimming with this fish and others. The village is ideally located, offering privileged access to the surrounding magnificent nature. In particular, it retains traces of the last ice age in Trollholmsund, where dolomites with dreamlike silhouettes can be seen. Do not miss this extraordinary sight!
Sami camp discovery
From the pier, embark on a 1 ¼ hour journey by coach to Máze, a Sami village located on the outskirts of Alta.
The Sami’s roots in Arctic Europe trace back at least 5,000 years. Descendants of nomadic people, they moved depending on their country geopolitic and finished to be confined in the northern extremity of the country. They belong to the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic family, and are mostly represented in Lapland and adjacent areas of Northern Norway, Sweden and Finland. Learn about the vibrant culture of indigenous Norwegians during your visit.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your hosts, members of a reindeer-herding family. You will have the opportunity to climb on board a reindeer-pulled sled for a picturesque ride along a frozen river. Relax as you glide along to the sound of reindeer bells and snow crunching under hooves.
After your ride, return to the village, where you will be invited into a large traditional tent called a lavvu. Take a seat next to a roaring fire and taste traditional specialities while your hosts entertain you with stories of Sami traditions and modern life. Later, you will return to your ship.

Your evening experience will start onboard! Your northern lights expert, Trygve will meet you on board the ship, where he will explain the northern lights phenomenon, as well as providing advices on the best camera settings needed to photograph the lights. The hard work of planning has already been done by your expert, by monitoring the skies and the northern lights forecast beforehand to ensure that you will be at the very best location to observe the sky.
Then, board your local coach and head to your observation spot. On location, the anticipation of spotting the lights is all part of the fun, and your eyes are bound to be glued to the sky as you wait for them to show. Trygve has many years of experience, and his sighting rate is an incredible 95%, so if the lights are visible, he should know where to find them. If you are lucky, the vivid colours will certainly amaze you. In fact words cannot do them justice; you really have to see them for yourself! All the camps are situated near warm facilities or ‘Lavvu’s’, where you can enjoy hot drinks whilst you wait for those magical lights.

Take in glorious vistas along Europe’s far northern shores and enjoy an independent visit at Nordkapp (North Cape).
You will meet your coach at our berth and transfer approximately one hour to one of Europe’s most stunning natural sights. Located on the reaches of Magerøya Island, where the Norwegian and Barents Seas meet, the cliffs of Nordkapp rise more than 1,000 feet from the sea and are topped by a large, flat plateau.
Upon arrival, you will have time to take in the spectacular vista of barren tundra. You will also have a chance to visit the North Cape Hall, which chronicles the history of the region. Spend time on your own, perhaps visiting the small ecumenical St. John’s Chapel. An excellent film at the visitors’ centre depicts the region through the seasons. Or, if you prefer, simply find yourself the perfect overlook and ponder your journey.

Take a glimpse of the region’s rich fishing heritage and learn how it has prospered from its relationship with the sea.
You will drive through Honningsvåg to the most scenic fishing village on Magerøya Island, beautifully nestled at the head of a narrow fjord. This pretty hamlet is home to the “Gallery East of the Sun,” which exhibits art, handicrafts, and books, all inspired by the island and its ever-changing seasons. The artist will welcome you and explain her unusual works. Afterwards, stroll with your guide around the typical fishing wharf and explore on your own.
Your next stop will be the tiny village of Sarnes, where you will enjoy coffee in a lavvo, a traditional structure of the indigenous Sami people. Hear about the king crabs that thrive in these waters, which reach up to six feet in length and weigh as much as 22 pounds.
Then, you will return to your ship.

Venture out on the waters to catch your own king crab on this thrilling excursion.
Walk to our fishing pier with your guide, put on your required floating suits at the adventure centre, follow your guide to the pier and set off in a deep-sea raft into the pristine waters of Sarnesfjorden. The vistas are breathtaking, with green slopes soaring above the sea on all sides.
Our destination is a stunning fjord, where you will see how prized king crabs are harvested as your guide pulls the trap from the watery depths. Though a crab from these waters can measure up to six feet between its claws and weigh as much as 22 pounds, we are likely to only catch “small” crabs at 6 to 15 pounds.
Back on shore, you will learn about the life, anatomy and history of the king crab and feast on your catch, with preparation tips from the cook.

Sami Park & Engholm husky
From the pier, board your local coach and head to Sapmi Park.
Upon arrival, experience the Sami culture and history in an entertaining and engaging way. Experience The Magical Theatre, ‘Siida’ with reindeer, Sami handicrafts, the souvenir shop with its own silversmith, the glassblower workshop, and Storgammen restaurant. Take this opportunity to immerse yourself in the Sami culture guided by your local expert.
Then, enjoy a traditional sami lunch at Storgammen restaurant your transfer to Engholm husky. On the way, have a brief photostop at the Sami parlement.
At Engholm husky, meet the enthusiastic Alaskan Husky. Here you will understand the special relationship between the musher and his dog. Your guide will introduce the arctic survival gear, sleds and racing equipment. Hear about the work with the sled dogs and watch a dogmushing demonstration. Then, visit the puppy-yard and linger with the friendly adult racing dogs. It is not required to be a passionate dog-lover to gain respect and admiration for these hard working dogs and their qualities.
After the visit, enjoy a hot drink with home made cake served outdoors by the campfire while enjoying some good stories.

From the pier, board your local coach and head to Stabbursnes Nature House and Museum, an information center for nature and culture in Finnmark and a National Park Visitor Center for Stabbursdalen National Park.
Upon arrival, enjoy a short hike, part of the nature trail that starts at Stabbursnes. While walking, discover the world's northernmost pine forest. After rejoining the visitor centre, you will be greeted by a tasting of local specialties such as dried reindeermeat, smoked salmon and smoked cheese.
Then, follow your guide across the exhibition and get an introduction to the Finnmark`s natural and cultural history. In addition, you will learn more about the Stabbursdalen National Park. Take this opportunity to experience the outdoor area with its turf hut, shelter, campfire place and seating.

From the pier, embark on a 1 ¼ hour journey by coach to Máze, a Sami village located on the outskirts of Alta.
The Sami’s roots in Arctic Europe trace back at least 5,000 years. Descendants of nomadic people, they moved depending on their country geopolitic and finished to be confined in the northern extremity of the country. They belong to the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic family, and are mostly represented in Lapland and adjacent areas of Northern Norway, Sweden and Finland. Learn about the vibrant culture of indigenous Norwegians during your visit.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your hosts, members of a reindeer-herding family. You will have the opportunity to climb on board a reindeer-pulled sled for a picturesque ride along a frozen river. Relax as you glide along to the sound of reindeer bells and snow crunching under hooves.
After your ride, return to the village, where you will be invited into a large traditional tent called a lavvu. Take a seat next to a roaring fire and taste traditional specialities while your hosts entertain you with stories of Sami traditions and modern life. Later, you will return to your ship.

Your northern lights expert, Trygve will meet you on board the ship, where he will explain the northern lights phenomenon, as well as providing advices on the best camera settings needed to photograph the lights. The hard work of planning has already been done by your expert, by monitoring the skies and the northern lights forecast beforehand to ensure that you will be at the very best location to observe the sky.
Then, board your local coach and head to your observation spot. On location, the anticipation of spotting the lights is all part of the fun, and your eyes are bound to be glued to the sky as you wait for them to show. Trygve has many years of experience, and his sighting rate is an incredible 95%, so if the lights are visible, he should know where to find them. If you are lucky, the vivid colours will certainly amaze you. In fact words cannot do them justice; you really have to see them for yourself! All the camps are situated near warm facilities or ‘Lavvu’s’, where you can enjoy hot drinks whilst you wait for those magical lights.

You will meet your coach at our berth and transfer approximately one hour to one of Europe’s most stunning natural sights. Located on the reaches of Magerøya Island, where the Norwegian and Barents Seas meet, the cliffs of Nordkapp rise more than 1,000 feet from the sea and are topped by a large, flat plateau.

Take a glimpse of the region’s rich fishing heritage and learn how it has prospered from its relationship with the sea.
You will drive through Honningsvåg to the most scenic fishing village on Magerøya Island, beautifully nestled at the head of a narrow fjord. This pretty hamlet is home to the “Gallery East of the Sun,” which exhibits art, handicrafts, and books, all inspired by the island and its ever-changing seasons. The artist will welcome you and explain her unusual works. Afterwards, stroll with your guide around the typical fishing wharf and explore on your own.
Your next stop will be the tiny village of Sarnes, where you will enjoy coffee in a lavvo, a traditional structure of the indigenous Sami people. Hear about the king crabs that thrive in these waters, which reach up to six feet in length and weigh as much as 22 pounds.

Venture out on the waters to catch your own king crab on this thrilling excursion.
Walk to our fishing pier with your guide, put on your required floating suits at the adventure centre, follow your guide to the pier and set off in a deep-sea raft into the pristine waters of Sarnesfjorden. The vistas are breathtaking, with green slopes soaring above the sea on all sides.
Our destination is a stunning fjord, where you will see how prized king crabs are harvested as your guide pulls the trap from the watery depths. Though a crab from these waters can measure up to six feet between its claws and weigh as much as 22 pounds, we are likely to only catch “small” crabs at 6 to 15 pounds.
Back on shore, you will learn about the life, anatomy and history of the king crab and feast on your catch, with preparation tips from the cook.
