From Bergen to Reykjavik, PONANT proposes an 11-day expedition cruise aboard Le Champlain exploring the most beautiful landscapes of the Celtic and Viking lands of Norway, Scotland, the Faroe Islands and Iceland.
From Bergen, the city founded by the Vikings and famous for its Hanseatic wharf, you will sail in the calm waters of Hardangerfjord, the second longest fjord in Norway. In the heart of this natural preserved jewel, you will discover stunning scenery while lavish fruit orchards sprawl across its lush shores.
Le Champlain will then set sail west towards the Shetland Islands. The exploration of this British archipelago located in the North Atlantic Drift promises breath-taking scenery on land and at sea: a jagged coastline of immaculate sandy beaches, windswept verdant moors, thousand-year-olds cliffs sculpted by marine erosion. To the great pleasure of ornithologists, many bird colonies have found refuge in the crevices of these landscapes! The Shetland Islands and the Orkney Islands are deeply steeped in Viking and Scottish heritage and can also be discovered via their remarkably well-preserved archaeological vestiges.
Your ship will then sail north towards the the Faroe Islands, Denmark’s northernmost autonomous territory. In this isolated archipelago, you will immerse yourself in a wild and spectacular natural environment. In Suduroy, the rolling plains populated by sheep shape the scenery punctuated by sheer summits, mountain lakes and jagged cliffs looking out to the islands, offering outstanding terrestrial and maritime panoramas. Eysturoy reveals itself through the life of the archipelago’s inhabitants, between remote villages, green roofs, a traditional black wooden church, and local customs. You will also enjoy sailing around cliffs that are home to bird colonies. Here, Viking legends and Nordic cosmogony are never far away.
On the edge of the Arctic, with its vertiginous fjords, volcanoes and waterfalls, Iceland offers up a simultaneously romantic and wild face. In the East Fjords region, where life is organised around fishing, you will discover a jagged coastline and alpine landscapes before reaching Heimaey. This is the only inhabited island in the Westman archipelago. An exceptional place composed of volcanoes and almost-desert landscapes, it is also a refuge for many colonies of birds, including gannets.
Finally, you will arrive in Reykjavik, the world’s northernmost capital, your disembarkation port.

Expedition programmes include activities such as zodiac outings and landings (sometimes with "wet landing"), moderate walks to more active hikes, all accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides.
Ports of call, visited sites, outings and landings will depend on weather conditions, position of ice, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.
Travelling to polar/isolated regions is an exhilarating experience in remote areas: please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is extremely expensive. Without adequate medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid with your personal funds. We urge you to subscribe to full coverage insurance, choose your insurance company very carefully, be extremely vigilant and ensure your insurance is fully comprehensive, especially if you are insured by your credit card. Located at the end of Byfjord, Bergen was the capital of Norway in the 12th and 13th Centuries and has preserved some very beautiful monuments from the time when it was home to royalty. Wandering through Bergen’s streets means going back in time, in search of the hidden treasures that have been listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. A veritable openair museum, Bergen is home to a thriving artistic community of painters, potters, jewellers. The Bergen cable car offers you a splendid panorama over the port and the surrounding fjords. Do not miss the visit to the old quarter with its narrow streets, a testimony of the power of the hanseatic League that controlled trade in Northern Europe at the end of the Middle Ages.

In the heart of Norway’s natural scenery, to the southeast of Bergen, you will sail the peaceful waters of the Hardangerfjord, the second longest fjord in Norway. At the wide mouth of this majestic fjord, gently sloping valleys offer the sight of lush meadows and fruit trees galore. Moreover, it is rightly nicknamed the “fruit orchard of Norway". As you continue sailing and move further inland, the fjord narrows and the rolling surroundings make way for vertiginous walls and high mountainous areas. The small and charming capital of the Shetland Islands, with its sea front of old houses and narrow streets, offering travellers its old districts and a warm port atmosphere. Geopark Shetland, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located to the north. Incredibly well-preserved archaeological sites and ruins prove that the islands’ occupation dates back to the first Neolithic colonies. The Shetland Museum and Archives recounts the Shetlands’ history of heritage and culture: Lerwick’s abundant waters were even fished by the Dutch in the past.

Many colonies of birds have chosen to nest on the towering sandstone cliffs on the eastern coast of the Isle of Noss. The many ledges sculpted into the rock effectively make for ideal breeding sites for the gannets, puffins, guillemots, black-legged kittiwakes, razorbills, arctic fulmars and great skuas that populate this territory. Separated from the island of Bressay by a sound of only 100 metres (328 feet), this wild island in the Shetland archipelago has been a national nature reserve of Scotland since 1955. But the true architectural treasure of the aptly named Kirkwall is none other than its remarkable red and gold stone cathedral. Suduroy Island, literally “South Island”, has one of the smallest populations in the Faroe Islands. It has sheer cliffs along its western face. The island is an important breeding ground for seabirds, including northern fulmars, black-legged kittiwakes, Atlantic puffins, and guillemots. Your expedition team will guide you as you discover the island, its authentic villages with black, tarred-wood churches typical of the Faroe Islands, and its hiking trails lined with peat fields and stone sheepfolds. Sheep are indeed omnipresent throughout the Faroe Islands — in fact, there are more sheep than humans —, and they add to the charm of these wild landscapes.

Your stop on Eysturoy Island (“East Island” in Danish) will be an opportunity to immerse yourself in a traditional village of the Faroe Islands. The locals only welcome a few dozen visitors each year, so this is a rare privilege. In the company of your naturalist guides and local guides, you will discover the village, where certain houses have a typical Scandinavian roof, made from birch bark covered with sod. Here, you will enjoy a traditional coffee. Our more athletic guests will be able to hike along the trails that connected the island’s villages when people got around on foot. These trails are marked with cairns due to the frequent presence of fog.

The Faroe Islands, an archipelago formed by volcanic rock, reveal an incredible diversity of reliefs where the sea is ubiquitous: you’ll sail past stone pinnacles and unique coastlines. To the west of the island of Vagar stand Thindolmur and Drangarnir, rocky outcrops that marine erosion have detached from the coast, thus forming independent islets known as stacks. The impressive Traelanipa cliff, also known as Slave Cliff, stands 142 metres (466 feet) high. It overlooks the superb Lake Sorvagsvatn. Located 30 metres (98 feet) above sea level, this is the archipelago’s largest lake. On the island of Streymoy, you’ll be able to spot guillemots, screeching fulmars or penguins, nesting in the welcoming crevices of the Vestmanna cliffs.

EastFjords are part of the wildest and most unspoiled areas of Iceland. Here, various glaciations have carved out the volcanic plateaus that have eroded over the millennia, carving valleys and creating long, majestic fjords into which the sea intrudes. This slow metamorphosis has created sublime landscapes that you will be able to observe in all their diversity: basalt cliffs plunging into the sea, waterfalls with crystal clear waters, black sand volcanic beaches, alpine reliefs, hot springs. In this remote area, birds have found refuge in a rich ecosystem, such as puffins mainly in May and June. Here, nature is written in capital letters.

This land seated off the southern coast of Iceland is the largest of the Vestmann islands, and is the only inhabited island in the archipelago. The steep Edfell volcanoes and the green prairies of Herjólfsdalur offer rich contrast of nature. On the Stórhöfði road, look out over grey sand beaches and cliffs carved out by the Arctic ocean. From here, you can also see the bronze landscapes of the mountaintops. You could visit Eldheimar, an ultra-modern and interactive museum which traces the volcanic eruption has experienced Heimaey in 1973.

Iceland’s capital stretches along the edge of a vast bay in the west of the country. Perlan, the “Pearl of Reykjavík”, a museum located on ’Oskjuhlið hill, offers a panoramic view of the lush, green landscapes. A little further, one can easily spot the signpost showing the way to the evangelical Hallgrímskirkja church, and to the historical centre where one can stroll along the Skólavördustígur and the Laugavegur, two lively streets with charming small shops. For some relaxation just outside of the city, visitors have the opportunity to visit the Reykjanes peninsula and its famous thermal lagoons of the Blue Lagoon.
Eldfell volcano hike
From the pier, meet your local guide and start your hiking tour on Eldfell volcano.
This hiking tour is a great way to get to know the volcanic history of the island and get in touch with the beautiful nature. The view over the island is beautiful and amazing and the island is rich in history. Enjoy a fun and lively walk over the lava with a local. The guide goes through the history of the 1973 volcanic eruption. He will tell you stories and will give you a glimpse into the lives of the local people building up the town afterwards and living on the island today.
First, you will reach Skansinn, where there is the replica of the old fort from the 17th century. Near there is the wooden church and Landlyst, the oldest house on the island. From Skansinn, you will walk up a small hill and walk over the new lava that was formed in the dramatic eruption in 1973. Your local guide will tell you about the eruption, the story of people who had to leave their home in one night. 5,000 inhabitants have been evacuated from the island.
Then, you will walk on the edge of the lava where there is a great view over the town before going up the Volcano Eldfell.
Finally, you will walk down to the Eldheimar Museum where you can experience the volcanic eruption through photos, videos, and installations. The highlight of the exhibition is an excavated home that was buried under ash and lava for 40 years.
If time permitting, you will have the choice to go back to your ship or explore the small town on your own.

Enjoy spending four days discovering Norwegian landscapes, traditions and culture along the Bergensbanen railway from Oslo to Bergen.
Day 1 - Oslo
Meet at Oslo Airport in the Arrival hall. Look for PONANT sign. You will be greeted by our local representative off the flight selected by PONANT or any other flight (provided that you have previously communicated your flight schedule to your travel agent).
You will be transferred to Amerikalinjen Hotel 4*.
Check-in.
The end of the day and the dinner are at leisure.
Day 2 – Oslo/Voss
After breakfast, you will walk from the hotel to Olso train station to begin your marvellous Bergen Railway journey to Voss, often described as the most beautiful train ride in the world.
You will ascend to over 4,000 feet above sea level as you cross the Hardangervidda plateau, which boasts breath-taking views. Upon your arrival in Voss, there is just a five-minute walk to the Fleischer’s Hotel where you will settle in. The village is one of West Norway's finest agricultural areas and is a well-known tourist resort and crossroads between the Sognefjord and the Hardangerfjord.
Lunch at the hotel.
After lunch, the excursion will continue by coach.
You will make your way through Norway’s sheer natural beauty to the Hardanger Juice and Cider Factory, located in the innermost part of the Hardanger Fjord at the Lekve fruit farm in Ulvik. Here you will have a guided tour of everything the farm offers. They make apple juice and cider, which has played an important role in the farm’s production since 2004. In 2009, it also began producing apple brandy. Hardanger Cider, the fairy-tale drink, is also on the menu and is still being made according to the old recipe, just using modern tools. You will get a chance to taste the produce as part of your visit.
Afterwards, you will return to the hotel for dinner.
Day 3 – Voss/Flåm/Bergen

You will leave the hotel in the morning by coach for a second day of exploration.
On leaving the Voss area, you will travel across several landscapes to reach Flåm. You will stop at the beautiful Tvindefoss waterfall, and also at Gudvangen at the head of the Næroyfjord, listed by UNESCO as the most beautiful fjord in the world. Flåm is 2 meters above sea level, situated in the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord, and is 90 sea miles away from the North Sea. You will have some leisure time in this quiet village, before lunch in a local restaurant.
After lunch, your journey continues with the famous Flåm railway. The Flåm railway is one of the most interesting pieces of engineering in Norway. Only 20 kilometres long, it runs from sea-level Flåm station up to Myrdal with an altitude of 867 metres. Enjoy the unique and impressive views up the steep valley between towering mountains and the Kjosfossen waterfall where the water cascades between dark cliffs and the splendid panoramic views that unfold before your eyes.
Upon arrival at Myrdal station, situated on a ridge above the Flåm valley, you will change trains for a scenic trip down the Bergen Railway taking you through the beautiful West Norwegian countryside. You will pass through the Graqvhalstunnel and the picturesque Raundal Valley before reaching the beautiful Vangs Lake at Voss. You will continue on along the Voss River, well-known for its salmon fishing, and down to the Bolstadfjord to the industrial centre of Dale, followed by the narrow Sørfjord, finally arriving in Bergen.
You will be transferred to the Opus XVI Hotel 4* for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4 – Bergen
Breakfast at the hotel and leisure time, followed by check-out.
In Bergen, which was founded in 1070 AD, you will start your guided tour of the city with a local guide at the fish market where you will enjoy lunch, and see the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bryggen, the picturesque wharf that helped put Bergen at the centre of the Hanseatic League. Explore King Haakon’s Hall, which was built between 1247 and 1261 as a royal residence and feasting hall.
For a wider view of this beautiful city, ascend Mt. Fløien via the funicular railway. From the summit, some 984 feet above sea level, enjoy spectacular views of Bergen’s seaside setting.
The tour will end at the pier for embarkation.

Fleischer’s Hotel 4*, Voss
In the mountains of Western Norway, in the centre of the Voss, you will find a modern hotel, with many traditions, which was built in 1889 in the popular Swiss style. Fleischer's Hotel is known for its venerable atmosphere, grand dining room and attentive host. The hotel has been serving tourists in Western Norway for more than 150 years and has thus helped build Voss as a tourist destination. It is also environmentally committed and obtained the Eco-Lighthouse Ecolabel for the first time in 2013. Its owners are passionate about sustainability and they work systematically to limit their environmental footprint.
Opus XVI Hotel 4*, Bergen
The family name of the owners, Grieg, will surely ring a bell. They are relatives of the very famous composer and pianist Edvard Grieg, who was born and died in Bergen, in 1907. The hotel has unique architecture, with the main hall and its airy appearance, solid granite walls and Ionic columns in polished marble. The building was designed by the architect Herman Schirmer and was later extended in two phases. Architect Schak Bull – who also designed the home of Edvard Grieg – was responsible for the last expansion in 1918. Wonderful beds, an excellent location and attentive service: here, you will enjoy a unique atmosphere, based on the rich heritage of Grieg and with the historic Vågsallmenningen 16 as a backdrop.

Day 2 - Bergen
Breakfast.
Free time in the morning to rest or to wander around the centre of Bergen at your own pace. This former Hanseatic trading town beckons travellers with its cultural wealth and its position in the heart of a stunning natural site, wedged between sea and mountain.
Once you have checked out of your hotel, you will be taken to lunch at a local restaurant.
You will then set off on a guided walking tour of Bergen’s historic district. You will learn more about the history of Bryggen, which, behind its picture-postcard decor, offers a unique glimpse into the Hansa organisation that dominated Northern Europe from the 12th century to the 17th. This emblematic district is indeed dotted with old Hanseatic mercantile buildings, damaged in 1702 by a devastating fire that tore through the area. After the fire, they were rebuilt in the same style as those from the Middle Ages. The place is now entirely protected, and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The guided walking tour will lead you to one of the narrow streets winding its way through the rows of houses now occupied by artists and artisans.
You will also stop in front of some other institutions of the Hanseatic city: the fish market, the Bergenhus Fortress, and the Fløyen funicular.
You will then be transferred to the pier of Bergen to embark on board your ship.

From the pier, meet your local guide and start your hiking tour on Eldfell volcano.
This hiking tour is a great way to get to know the volcanic history of the island and get in touch with the beautiful nature. The view over the island is beautiful and amazing and the island is rich in history. Enjoy a fun and lively walk over the lava with a local. The guide goes through the history of the 1973 volcanic eruption. He will tell you stories and will give you a glimpse into the lives of the local people building up the town afterwards and living on the island today.
First, you will reach Skansinn, where there is the replica of the old fort from the 17th century. Near there is the wooden church and Landlyst, the oldest house on the island. From Skansinn, you will walk up a small hill and walk over the new lava that was formed in the dramatic eruption in 1973. Your local guide will tell you about the eruption, the story of people who had to leave their home in one night. 5,000 inhabitants have been evacuated from the island.
Then, you will walk on the edge of the lava where there is a great view over the town before going up the Volcano Eldfell.
Finally, you will walk down to the Eldheimar Museum where you can experience the volcanic eruption through photos, videos, and installations. The highlight of the exhibition is an excavated home that was buried under ash and lava for 40 years.
If time permitting, you will have the choice to go back to your ship or explore the small town on your own.

First you will be transfer to Reykjanes lighthouse. Overlooking the North Atlantic Ocean, marvel at the picturesque views stretching as far as the eyes can see during your walk towards the cliffs of Valahnúkamöl.
You will continue with the lava rock pool of Brimketill, a creation of past volcanic activity. This unique pool, sculpted by nature, interacts with the ocean tides. Capture the beauty of this mystical place, where harmony between fire and water prevails.
