Winter is silently approaching and the day is slowly withdrawing near the Arctic Circle, making way for a long dusk pre-empting the darkness. Take the time to discover the Norwegian fjords and the sumptuous Lofoten archipelago, in the morning light or at dusk. The moment is perfect for a sensitive experience, if ever there were one, and for exploring this seasonal temporality like somewhere completely new.
The warm refuge of Le Commandant Charcot will open the doors for you to an all-new journey on the cusp of winter and invites you to explore the magnificent panoramas from the uninterrupted outside promenade deck, the Blue Lagoon pool or the Observatory Lounge. Appreciate the discreet and refined comfort of its spaces opening out onto the exterior and enjoy moments in complete communion with the elements.
Experience first-hand the North Cape, the summit of Europe, and explore the rugged shores of the edges of the Arctic and the natural sanctuaries of Norway: dolomite cliffs shaped by the last glaciation, an archaeological site dating from the Bronze Age, majestic fjords, remarkable coastal cities, fishing villages and coniferous forests. During this journey above the Arctic Circle, you will discover Lapland, home to the Sami, who are reindeer farmers and one of the last European indigenous people. During warm encounters, you will discover their cultural traditions and their way of life, in harmony with the elements. Immerse yourself in nature and, as the night overtakes the day, set off to chase the Northern Lights.
Amidst these distant landscapes, the Lofoten archipelago reveals itself, and is quite captivating. Can we conceive of a spectacle that is more fascinating than the undulating and coloured veil of the Northern Lights observed in the heart of these marvellous islands? The Swedish Impressionist artist, Anna Boberg (1864-1935) understood. She discovered the Lofoten Islands in 1901 and continued to return there over 33 years, finding the archipelago to be a great place from which to observe the Northern Lights. Her paintings give them a poetic, lyrical and almost mystic vision, celebrating the beauty of the setting.
Be like this passionate painter and allow the beauty of the journey soak in as the sky enshrouds the landscapes with surreal light.
The itinerary is subject to modifications. On board, the sailing programme, outings and activities cannot be guaranteed and are subject to weather conditions.

In terms of inhabitants, Harstad is the third largest city in Northern Norway, with approximately 23,000 persons living in the area. Situated approximately 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, the main industries are shipbuilding, fishing and trading. The town is also of cultural importance. Every year at the end of June, the Festival of Northern Norway is arranged with concerts, theatre performances and exhibitions of various kinds.
Departing from the pier, you will first take a scenic drive through the centre of the town as you head towards the Trondenes Peninsula. Here, you will stop for a visit at the Trondenes church, erected in 1250 in late Roman style. The oldest piece in the church is the baptismal font, and it is here where the first Christians of Northern Norway were baptized. The three beautiful triptychs were made in Northern Germany in medieval times and the organ is in late baroque/rococo style. Around the church building runs a wall that dates back to mediaeval times and you can even see the remains of two watchtowers that overlook the sea.
From the church, you will walk approximately 250 metres to the Historical Centre, which was opened in May, 1997. Here, the history of the Haalogaland Region is told through pictures, displays, special lighting and even smells. The Centre focuses on tales from the Norse Period and the Viking Period, and enlightens visitors on the power of the church, Norwegian heroes and old Norwegian customs.
Travelling back to the pier, your return route will take you through the suburbs to see how people live up here, far beyond the Arctic Circle.

Arctic Train transports you 43 kilometres through a desolate, wild and beautiful landscape along the Ofot line. The line stretches from Narvik in Nordland to Kiruna in Sweden and is Norway's most northerly railway. From the ice-blue fjord in Narvik to the bare mountains in Sweden, there are several historical events that form a dramatic backdrop for this excursion.
The construction of the Ofotbanen started at the end of the 19th century to ensure access to an ice-free export port for the huge iron ore deposits from northern Sweden. Itinerant workers, so-called "rallers" sought their fortune in what was referred to as Europe's "Klondyke", and at most over 5,000 people were involved in the construction of the track. As an export route for Europe's largest and most important iron ore deposits, the route was particularly important to control during the Second World War.
During your panoramic trip, cinamon buns and hot beverages will be served in the train.

Gain an in-depth understanding of Narvik's role in World War II during a visit to the War Museum and city cemetery. An important year-round, ice-free harbor with railway links to the rich iron ore mines of nearby Sweden, this northern port city was strategically vital to both the Germans and the Allies during the early days of the conflict. This culminated in the Battle of Narvik in April 1940-and the five-year Nazi occupation of the city.
Take a short drive to the Narvik War Museum, where its curator will guide you through the collection of photos and artifacts. You will also see a short film that focuses on the local events of World War II, as well as the universal issues related to war.
After browsing the exhibits, make a solemn visit to the city's cemetery, the final resting spot for the 34 Commonwealth soldiers who died during the Narvik campaign, before returning to your ship.in.
